St. Barbara’s Church in Poppel brings together several historical layers: Romanesque rubble-stone masonry, a Baroque interior and remnants of Late Gothic wall paintings. Other churches, landscape features and wine experiences in the Saale-Unstrut quality wine region offer different highlights. This gives you a choice of architecture, nature and local pleasures when planning your trip to Lanitz-Hassel-Tal.

Churches with Layers from Different Periods

The small Romanesque rubble-stone church of St. Barbara in Poppel was last renovated at its nave in 1734. The interior is Baroque in style, with a wooden mirror ceiling, galleries, a Baroque pulpit altar and a baptismal angel. Remnants of Late Gothic paintings depicting Saints Barbara and Dorothea survive on the walls. The building, interior design and painted decoration thus show different aspects of church history in one place.

Individual furnishings also have their own dates. Wilhelm Heerwagen built the organ in 1864, and a bronze bell dating from 1650 hangs in the tower. Visitors interested in historic churches can consider the building history and furnishings separately, rather than focusing on just one date of construction.

In Taugwitz, the church was built in 1899 in the Neo-Romanesque style on the site of a chapel believed to date from the 12th century. The two dates refer to different things: 1899 is the year the church was built, while the earlier chapel is dated only approximately to the 12th century. The church in Spielberg is dedicated to St. Martin and is considered one of the oldest parish and baptismal churches in the area. Different aspects of church history therefore sit side by side: a dated new building, an earlier chapel with an estimated date, and a traditional historical classification.

Landscape and Historical Routes

The Göttersitz landscape area includes steep Muschelkalk slopes, dry and semi-dry grasslands, rock formations and natural deciduous forests. This brings geological formations and different landscape types into focus. The protected area also includes the Schenkenholz forest, which lies on the plateau east of Niedermöllern. Its named location provides a specific point of reference for this part of the landscape.

The Via Regia offers a different historical perspective. It once ran south of Poppel and was an important east-west trade route. Its significance is therefore historical: it refers to the course of a former trade route, not a route in use today.

Wine Experiences in the Saale-Unstrut Region

Weinauszeit offers individual wine tastings and wine seminars focusing on regional wines. Private wine tours and wine events are also available in the Saale-Unstrut quality wine region. If you would like to include these experiences in your travel plans, check dates and availability in advance.

More Cultural Highlights in the Wider Burgenlandkreis Destination

In the wider Burgenlandkreis destination, Naumburg Cathedral provides a cultural highlight of its own. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1 July 2018. It is considered one of the most important cultural monuments of the European High Middle Ages; its architecture, stained-glass windows and sculptures are described as unique worldwide.

In Goseck, the circular enclosure, around 75 metres in diameter, is considered the earliest archaeological evidence of systematic observations of the sky. The monument was fully excavated and precisely reconstructed at its original site. Neuenburg Castle is another historical landmark: it was founded around 1090 by the Thuringian Count Ludwig the Springer and is a major stop on the Romanesque Road. These examples belong to the wider Burgenlandkreis destination and complement the local perspective with further cultural highlights, without implying a set itinerary.
