Zeitz offers a range of cultural points of interest to help you plan your trip. The restored town hall, Moritzburg Castle and St Peter and Paul Cathedral are major tourist attractions and stops on the Romanesque Road. The German Pram Museum adds its own distinctive theme: it traces the history of prams from the 1840s to the present day. You can therefore shape your stay around historic buildings and Romanesque architecture, or around a specialist collection.

Historic buildings, collections and printmaking

The three historic buildings mentioned give Zeitz a clear cultural identity; the pram museum complements it with a history of the everyday pram. The permanent exhibition presents this development through exhibits, interactive features and educational activities. If you enjoy exploring a longer history through specific objects, this focus offers a different perspective from the stops on the Romanesque Road.

The Johannes Lebek Centre is also part of the museum at Moritzburg Castle’s permanent cultural offering. Courses and workshops in artistic printmaking use historic hand presses. Individual exhibitions and programmes may change; if you are particularly interested in a course or a specific programme, check the latest information before your visit. This distinguishes the museums’ ongoing themes from individual events that may be important during your travel dates.

Getting there and choosing a hotel

You can reach the Moritzburg museum complex by car via the A9 or A4 motorways and the B2, B91 or B180 roads. Train services are available from Leipzig or Gera; cyclists can follow the Elster Cycle Route. Routes and transport services may change, so check the connection that suits you and the latest timetable before setting off.

When choosing a hotel in Zeitz, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to explore the historic buildings and their place on the Romanesque Road, are you interested in the history of prams, or are printmaking courses and workshops your main priority? If you are planning a specific visit to the Moritzburg complex, it is also worth checking your travel arrangements.

Culture across the wider Burgenlandkreis destination

The wider Burgenlandkreis destination has other distinct cultural themes to explore. Naumburg Cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1 July 2018. It is considered one of the most significant cultural monuments of the European High Middle Ages; its architecture, stained-glass windows and sculptures are described as unique in the world. The Goseck Solar Observatory, meanwhile, is considered the earliest archaeological evidence of systematic observation of the sky. The monument, around 75 metres in diameter, was fully excavated and accurately reconstructed at its original location.

The Sky Paths also run through the Burgenlandkreis, guiding visitors to archaeological and astronomical highlights associated with the Nebra Sky Disc and the Goseck Solar Observatory. The Arche Nebra is a modern visitor centre at the Sky Disc’s discovery site, offering tours, hands-on activities and special exhibitions. A digital planetarium presents the astronomical knowledge of the Bronze Age in a 22-minute show. At Goseck Castle, an information centre explains the excavations at Goseck and the phenomenon of circular enclosures. These regional themes broaden the cultural picture of the Burgenlandkreis, but should be distinguished from the attractions and activities in Zeitz.
