Near Selbach, the Nahequelle recreation area offers several specific ways to include activity and nature in your travel plans. The 5.5-kilometre Nahequelle Trail features adventure elements for swinging, balancing, climbing and crawling. Its length gives you a clear measure for planning, while the various elements add an active character to the route.

Nahequelle near Selbach: Walking routes and recreation facilities

Visitors can see donkeys, goats, mouflon, fallow deer and a peacock in the recreation area. The site also has a bee education trail, a climbing playground, a water playground and fitness stations. There is something to suit a range of interests, from watching animals and learning about bees to play and exercise. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the trail or on individual areas of the recreation grounds.

The Nahequelle is also the starting point for the Nahe Cycle Route, which follows the river towards Bingen, as well as for Nordic walking routes and other shorter walking paths. The options differ in how you get around: the cycle route follows the Nahe, while Nordic walking and shorter paths offer their own ways to explore on foot. Together with the 5.5-kilometre trail, they provide a choice of different ways to stay active rather than just one route. When planning, you can first consider whether cycling, Nordic walking, a walk or the trail’s adventure elements should be the main focus.

In the wider destination of Sankt Wendel

The Street of Sculptures offers a distinct focus on culture and routes. It stretches for 25 kilometres, starts in the town of Sankt Wendel and features 58 large stone blocks. The route invites you to walk or cycle. Its length, artworks and ways of getting around offer different points to consider when planning: you can treat it as a longer route or follow the sculptures as a cultural theme.

Architecture and regional art and cultural history are also highlights in Sankt Wendel. The Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of St. Wendelin is a late Gothic hall church; construction began in the mid-14th century. The permanent exhibition at the St. Wendel Museum presents works and objects from the region’s art and cultural history. This means a specific religious building with a documented construction period and a collection with a broader regional focus offer distinct cultural interests.

There are two guided tours of the old town, each described differently. The classic city tour follows a route through the old town within the former historic ring of the town wall. The “Through the City by Lantern Light” tour takes you through the old town with a night watchman. If you plan to book the classic city tour, check the current schedule in advance, as dates can change.

Sankt Wendel also offers a dedicated option for cycling travellers: its cycle network covers 200 kilometres of well-maintained, signposted routes for families, leisure cyclists and ambitious athletes. This is on a different scale from the 25-kilometre Street of Sculptures: here, the focus is on a cycle network for different kinds of riders, while the latter is a single cultural route that invites you to walk or cycle. Sankt Wendel is also set amid the diverse landscapes of Saar-HunsrĂĽck Nature Park.
