Freisen brings together a variety of natural and cultural attractions. At the nature wildlife park, the focus is on encounters with animals; at Weiselberg, geological formations, protected plants and Roman building remains shape the landscape. Museums offer another way to explore rural life and rocks from the surrounding area. You can choose how much to focus on the landscape, wildlife and local history according to your interests.

Wildlife, water and choosing your route

At Freisen Nature Wildlife Park, deer, reindeer, Arctic foxes, birds of prey and other animals are part of the experience. A 1.8-kilometre circular trail passes through areas where the animals mostly live freely; close encounters are possible with several species. The trail therefore combines the chance to observe different groups of animals with a clearly defined route through the grounds.

Another option for leisure activities is the Weiselberg swimming baths in Freisen-Oberkirchen. They offer water-based recreation for the whole family, along with a steam bath, a massage area and a hot whirlpool. The swimming pool roof opens in sunny weather and closes when the weather turns cooler. As operating details and the availability of facilities may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before planning a visit.

For a longer route, there is the Freisener EnergieTour 1: it is 20.3 kilometres long and has 384 metres of elevation gain. Compared with the circular trail at the nature wildlife park, this is a very different type of route. Along with its length, the elevation gain gives you another specific point of reference for planning. As route metrics may be revised, check the latest information before setting out.

Weiselberg and its natural park landscape

The Weiselberg nature reserve lies within the municipality of Freisen, near Oberkirchen. The 570-metre summit is characterised by specialised plants, lichens and mosses; remains of Roman buildings can also be found there. The “Steinernes Meer” boulder fields lie on the southern slope and were formed by extreme temperature fluctuations during the Ice Ages. Rare plants are protected in the wet meadows of the southern foothills. At Weiselberg, botanical features, an Ice Age landform and archaeological traces can thus be found side by side.

The Freisen area is part of Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. Extensive forests, species-rich meadows, river and stream valleys, and rock formations provide habitats for plants and animals. This broader landscape setting complements the view of Weiselberg’s individual features: alongside its boulder fields and protected plants, there is a diverse nature park landscape.

History and collections

Near Schwarzerden, a Mithras relief was carved into a sandstone wall; it dates from around 200 AD. This provides another specific connection to the region’s history, in addition to the Roman building remains at Weiselberg.

The Reitscheid Agricultural Museum is housed in a southwestern German farmhouse dating from 1862. Furnishings, agricultural tools and household objects illustrate rural life. The museum’s cultural programme includes craft courses, music evenings and poetry readings. If an event date is important for your visit, check the latest dates in advance.

The Freisen Mineral Museum displays rocks, agates and petrified wood from the municipality and nearby area. The museums therefore have different focuses: Reitscheid centres on everyday life and work in the countryside, while the Mineral Museum presents regional rocks and their variety.
