Two different scales shape the discovery of Sankt Wendel: a Late Gothic hall church, construction of which began in the mid-14th century, and the Sculpture Trail, which starts in the town. Other highlights include an exhibition on regional art and cultural history, guided tours and a 200-kilometre cycling network. The wider region also offers its own themes, including culture, wildlife and activities on the water.

Church architecture and regional cultural history

The Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of St. Wendelin in St. Wendel is a Late Gothic hall church. In this type of building, the nave and side aisles are approximately the same height. This makes it possible to place the church in both a historical and architectural context: construction began in the mid-14th century, establishing its historical timeframe, while the term “hall church” describes its architectural form.

The permanent exhibition at the St. Wendel Museum features works and objects relating to the region’s art and cultural history. This offers two distinct ways to explore the history of the area: the architecture of a church and the region’s art and cultural history in an exhibition. If you want to choose what to explore by theme, these two places offer different perspectives.

Sculpture Trail and cycling network

The Sculpture Trail starts in Sankt Wendel, stretches for 25 kilometres and features 58 large stone blocks. The route is ideal for a walk or a bike ride. It is important to consider the scale: the 25 kilometres refer to this individual cultural trail, while the cycling network in Sankt Wendel covers 200 kilometres in total. It offers well-maintained, signposted routes for families, leisure cyclists and ambitious athletes. You can choose between a themed trail and a larger network with a variety of routes.

Old town tours with different perspectives

The classic city tour of St. Wendel takes you through the old town within the former historic ring of the town walls. Check the current tour schedule before your visit. For a different perspective, “Through the Town by Lantern Light” takes the group through the old town with a night watchman as their guide. The classic tour is defined by its route within the former ring of walls, while the lantern tour is distinguished by its night watchman and evening theme. The two tours therefore differ in their focus.

Nature park and other regional destinations

St. Wendel lies in the diverse landscape of Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. In the wider region, St. Mauritius Abbey in Tholey is considered one of the oldest monastic foundations on German soil. In Freisen, a 1.8-kilometre circular trail passes through a wildlife park where most of the animals roam freely. The park also breeds the northern bald ibis, described as one of the world’s most endangered bird species.

Bostalsee is the largest recreational lake in southwestern Germany. Activities available there include sailing, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating. There are also two beach areas for swimming in summer. As individual offerings may change and swimming is seasonal, check what is currently available before your visit. Each destination has a different focus: Tholey is known for its monastic history, Freisen for its trail through the wildlife park, and Bostalsee for water sports and summer swimming.
