Tholey brings together art and architectural history at St. Mauritius Benedictine Abbey, with views and trails on Schaumberg. The area also includes the archaeological site of Wareswald and museums with different historical focuses. When planning your visit, consider what kind of outing you’re looking for: a short walk, a challenging cycling route, or time for culture and history.

The Abbey and Schaumberg: Architecture and Views

St. Mauritius Benedictine Abbey is considered one of the oldest monastic foundations on German soil. Its Gothic church has 37 newly designed windows, including works by Mahbuba Maqsoodi and Gerhard Richter. The complex also includes a formal garden, Baroque architectural features and historic furnishings. Church architecture, the works of the two artists and the historic furnishings offer different perspectives on the same place.

Tholey lies on the southern slope of the 569-meter-high Schaumberg and is part of Saar-HunsrĂĽck Nature Park. The Schaumberg Tower adds a viewpoint to the landscape: its observation platform is 37.5 meters above the ground and offers a 360-degree panorama extending beyond the Saarland. An indoor elevator leads to the platform, which is considered fully accessible. Check the current access conditions before your visit.

Routes for Every Pace

The Herzweg is a circular trail around Schaumberg. The 2.8-kilometer paved route has gentle inclines and is accessible. Stops along the way include a panoramic frame, a wellness bench and places of energy. If you’d prefer a longer cycling trip, the Schaumberg Cycle Route is a challenging 40-kilometer loop. It starts in Tholey and passes through Marpingen and St. Wendel before reaching the Johann-Adams-Mühle in Theley. The Mauritius Circular Route connects the abbey with the market square, the Theulegium Museum and Schaumberg, offering another way to explore on foot.

Archaeology and Crafts

Vicus Wareswald is located at the foot of Schaumberg, between Marpingen, Oberthal and Tholey. The excavation site is open to visitors year-round. Those interested in archaeology can volunteer on excavations; prior arrangements may be required.

In Theley, the Johann-Adams-MĂĽhle is a historic working water mill that houses the District Mill Museum. Bread-making classes use the old stone oven to teach the tradition of baking fresh bread. Advance arrangements may be required for classes.

Museum and Events in Neipel

The Haus am Mühlenpfad local history museum in Neipel documents village life in the Schaumberger Land, particularly the history of the Bohnental valley. Its program includes changing exhibitions, concerts and regular theater performances. As event dates may change, check in advance what’s taking place during your stay.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Sankt Wendel

In the wider destination of Sankt Wendel, the Street of Sculptures stretches for 25 kilometers and features 58 large stone blocks. The route is ideal for a walk or a bike ride.
