In Mandelbachtal, marked hiking trails meet insights into village and monastery history, as well as activities related to the cultural landscape. When planning, it is worth bearing in mind the different types of activities: a guided hike, sections of a long-distance trail, or a visit with set opening days each offer a different experience.

Compare hiking trails and stages

The developed and marked network of hiking trails in Mandelbachtal covers more than 70 kilometres. It may be adjusted over time, so check the route and markings before setting off. The Premium Bliesgau Table Tour can be hiked from the SchornwaldhĂĽtte forest car park in Erfweiler-Ehlingen. Here, too, check access and the current markings before setting out.

One guided option is the 13-kilometre Bliesgau Genuss Tour, offered in Mandelbachtal. Check the current dates in advance. The Bliessteig is laid out differently: its first two daily stages run through Mandelbachtal. This lets you choose between a guided tour with a specified distance and a section of a multi-stage route, without planning both in the same way.

For navigation, there is the Bliesgau Pathfinder app and a brochure featuring a total of 95 marked tours, many of them in Mandelbachtal. The app shows, among other things, route length, elevation gain, duration, markings, starting points and public transport information; it also allows GPX downloads. Digital route details may be updated if trails change.

More outdoor activities

There is a variety of activities beyond hiking, too: three Nature.Fitness.Parks offer routes of three different lengths. For road cyclists, the hilly terrain, with gradients of up to 18 per cent, is an important factor to consider when planning. Horse riding is available year-round at riding stables in Mandelbachtal; check availability with local providers in advance.

Educational canoeing is offered on the Blies near Habkirchen and Bliesmengen-Bolchen. As programmes and dates may change, check the current providers and dates in advance. Fishing is permitted with a licence on the Blies and Mandelbach rivers and at a fishing pond in Habkirchen managed by a local club. Check the applicable permit and access conditions. There is also a small BMX and bike track at the sports ground in Heckendalheim; local conditions may change.

Cultural landscape and history

The Haus Lochfeld Cultural Landscape Centre is located in a nature reserve. Its small exhibition focuses on cultural landscapes, and events are held there regularly. The outdoor grounds include an organic vineyard, an orchard meadow, a bee house and several themed gardens. The grounds are open year-round and free of charge. Check local conditions before visiting.

The Village History House in Bliesmengen-Bolchen focuses on rural life in Mandelbachtal in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Exhibits include a historic shoemaker’s workshop, a kitchen and a bedroom from the early 20th century. The exhibition also features a historic barbershop and tools associated with a former village doctor, dentist and midwife. The house is open from April to December on the third Sunday of each month, or by prior arrangement. Check the visiting arrangements in advance.

According to tradition, Gräfinthal Monastery near Bliesmengen-Bolchen was founded in 1243 as a Wilhelmite monastery and was the last Wilhelmite monastery on German soil. Benedictine monks have lived there again since 1999. Alongside the village history, the monastery offers a different perspective on the past: here, the focus is on the history of a religious community, while the exhibitions explore everyday life in the region.

To plan your stay, you can first choose your main interest: marked hiking trails and stages, cycling or horse riding, activities on the Blies, or cultural history. For visits and activities subject to seasonal schedules or specific dates, the latest information from the respective providers can help with detailed planning.
