Roman everyday finds, fortress history and trails on the Schlossberg reveal different sides of Homburg. There is also a historic town center and nature experiences such as observing white storks. When planning your trip, it is worth focusing on your interests: Would you like to learn more about Roman times, go hiking, or combine culture with tastings? Your choice of activities will shape the character of your stay.
Roman Times and Fortress History
The open-air museum in Schwarzenacker presents the layout of a Roman road station, with buildings, outdoor areas, roads and canals. The Edelhaus houses Roman art, craft and household finds. The Roman Museum Homburg-Schwarzenacker is not fully accessible in several areas. If accessibility is important for your plans, check the conditions before your visit.
The history of the fortress can also be traced through time: In the 12th century, Hohenburg Castle was the seat of the Counts of Homburg. Under Louis XIV, Sébastien Prestre de Vauban expanded Homburg’s castle into a modern citadel. In the wider Saarpfalz-Kreis destination, individual visitors can explore the Schlossberg Caves in Homburg across three levels; check visiting arrangements in advance. The caves are considered Europe’s largest sandstone caves.
The interactive “Lauschtour” brings the Vauban fortress to life with an audio guide. App content and availability may change, so check before planning your visit. You can explore the fortress through both its historical development and an audio experience.
Old Town and Culture in the Urban Landscape
The historic old town includes the market square and St. Michael’s Church. Restored buildings invite you to stroll and linger. These places offer a different way to explore Homburg’s history than the Roman finds and fortifications: here, the focus is on the town center that has evolved over time and its distinctive landmarks.
The Saarperlen Tour offers another way to combine culture and enjoyment. It combines sightseeing in Homburg with tastings of sparkling wine, wine and snacks. As the program and tasting options may change, check current availability in advance.
Hiking Trails, Park and Nature Watching
The 13-kilometer Schlossberg Tour is rated as a premium hiking trail. It starts behind the ruins of Hohenburg Castle and passes the Schlossberg Caves, Stumpfer Gipfel, Karlsbergweiher and Karlsbergquelle. Other stops include the remains of the former orangery, bear enclosures and a swan pond. The trail length provides a clear point of reference for planning; check current trail conditions before setting out.
For a shorter route, the four-kilometer Biotop-Kultur-Rundweg Beeden is another option. It starts at the viewpoint between the sports fields on Sandweg. Heck cattle, water buffalo and Konik horses provide extensive grazing in the Beeden biotope; two viewing platforms are used to observe white storks. Animal numbers and sightings may vary seasonally. Check the signs and access conditions on site.
Homburg also offers well-marked walking paths through the Kulturpark, over the Schlossberg and through recreation areas with numerous ponds. Homburg City Park has been an urban oasis for recreation since 1982. Its facilities include a water playground with a play ship, rafts and climbing wall, another playground and a skate park. Check when the play facilities are available before your visit.
The two circular routes differ considerably in length: the Biotop-Kultur-Rundweg Beeden is four kilometers long, compared with 13 kilometers for the Schlossberg Tour. This helps you choose a route without assuming a walking time or difficulty level. You should also take local conditions into account on paths through the Kulturpark or recreation areas.
