A sandstone monolith almost seven metres high, set on a ridge near Blieskastel, makes a striking impression: the Gollenstein. In the wider Saarpfalz-Kreis destination, the Gollenstein near Blieskastel is around 5,000 years old and is considered one of Germany’s oldest cultural monuments and one of Central Europe’s largest menhirs. Anyone wishing to combine culture with outdoor trails in Blieskastel will find not only this distinctive landmark, but also a Baroque townscape, hiking routes and cycling destinations.
Baroque town centre and distinctive cultural sites
The historic town centre is a protected Baroque ensemble with 154 designated individual monuments. Restored courtyards, winding lanes, a pedestrian zone, shops and cafés are part of its character. The Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle stands on the Han above Blieskastel and was built in 1682/83. The Stations of the Cross in the pilgrimage monastery complex date from 1857. They replaced the destroyed Seven Stations of the Cross.
Another collection is devoted to the art of clockmaking: the La Pendule Clock Museum displays 99 clocks in five rooms covering 150 square metres. Its focus is on French pendulum clocks. The number of exhibits and the clearly defined theme make the museum a cultural attraction in its own right alongside the historic buildings. Check the opening arrangements before visiting.
Hiking through forests, fields and over ridges
The hiking options include themed trails through deciduous and coniferous forests, as well as routes across fields and ridges with far-reaching views. For a section with a specified distance, consider the Bliessteig: its section from Blieskastel to Kirkel is 9.92 kilometres long. The route information describes different options, from nature-rich trails through forests and open countryside to a section with a clearly stated distance.
Cycling routes and trails by Würzbacher Weiher
The Bliestal leisure trail starts right in Blieskastel. The town’s connection to Saarland’s unified, well-signposted cycling network can also be included in your route planning; this statewide network supports planning your own route. Signage and routes may change. Weatherproof bicycle lockers are available at Würzbacher station and Blieskastel station and can be booked via an app. Check availability and booking terms in advance.
Würzbacher Weiher is in the Niederwürzbach district. There is a short circular trail as well as other hiking and cycling routes, including the Sieben-Weiher-Tour family cycling route. The circular trail takes you past the preserved Annahof and the Roter Bau. This makes it possible to combine a short walk with a look at these historic buildings, while the other routes offer a different way to get around. The leisure complex by the pond also includes a motorhome parking area; check the details before your trip.
For an additional cycling activity, the pump track in the Blickweiler district is an option: the natural circular track has rollers, banked turns and jumps and is suitable for all age groups. Check the condition of the facility and access before visiting.
Seasonal gardens and regional travel
The Edible Biosphere City project allows visitors to harvest produce from garden beds and hanging planters. What is available depends on the season. The Biosphere Citizens’ Garden is also open to visitors seasonally and regularly offers public guided tours. Find out about seasonal access details in advance.
For travel around the region, Biosphere Bus 501 runs hourly along the Blies in the Saarpfalz-Kreis. It connects Blieskastel with Homburg and the European Cultural Park Bliesbruck-Reinheim. Check the timetable before your trip. When choosing accommodation in Blieskastel, you can also consider whether you plan to explore mainly the town and its trails or include other destinations in the region.
