A stone around 5,000 years old, a castle with a turbulent history, and an accessible burial mound: discoveries in the Saarpfalz District take you through different eras. The Gollenstein near Blieskastel is considered one of Germany’s oldest cultural monuments. Burg Kirkel was first mentioned in a document in 1075, abandoned during the Thirty Years’ War, and finally destroyed in 1689. These two places offer very different ways to explore the past: one is an ancient cultural monument, the other a castle with a clearly dated history.
Archaeology and Everyday History
The Bliesbruck-Reinheim European Cultural Park covers around 70 hectares on both sides of the German-French border in the Blies Valley. The German section of the park is in Reinheim (Gersheim), where you’ll find the reconstructed, accessible burial mound of the Princess of Reinheim. This archaeological site can be explored beyond the perspective of a museum exhibition. For current museum offerings, it’s a good idea to check visitor information in advance.
The Altenkirch family’s Museum of Rural Everyday Culture in Rubenheim offers a different glimpse into life in the past. It is housed in a former inn and farmhouse dating from the first half of the 18th century. The exhibits focus on the everyday lives of farming families, day laborers, craftspeople, and workers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Rather than focusing on major individual events, the museum highlights the lives of different groups.
The Schwarzenacker Roman Museum offers a guided tour of its open-air museum that lasts about an hour. If you have limited time for your visit, you can take this approximate duration into account when planning your day. Tours and booking arrangements may change, so check the information for your visit in advance.
In Homburg, individual visitors can explore the Schlossberg Caves across three levels. Visiting arrangements may change, so it’s a good idea to check the latest information before your trip. You can also explore Homburg’s Vauban Fortress with the interactive “Lauschtour” audio guide; check in advance that its content and availability suit your visit. In Bexbach, the Saarland Mining Museum traces the development of mining in Saarland and shows old and new extraction techniques in an extensive underground mine exhibit.
Discover Orchids and Compare Trails
Parts of the Gersheim orchid area have been protected since 1957. The Orchid Trail features ten stops covering distinctive species, their local distribution, and the conservation of their habitats. Along the way, you’ll learn not only about the plants themselves, but also where they grow and how their habitats are preserved.
Two trails of different lengths are available for walks and hikes in the area: the short circular route is 1.8 kilometers long and has seven stops. The long hiking trail to the Kalkquellsumpf is 2.7 kilometers long and has ten stops. Their lengths and number of stops make it easy to compare the two options; no walking time or specific difficulty level is given. As routes may change, check the latest route information before setting out.
You can also plan your journey to the orchid area: Biosphere Bus 501 runs to Gersheim bus station, from where the area is reachable via a footpath of about 30 minutes. Check the current timetable before traveling. If you’d rather explore longer routes, you can follow the course of the Bliessteig quality long-distance hiking trail: it starts in Sarreguemines, France, passes through the municipality of Mandelbachtal on its first two daily stages, and then continues through the Saarpfalz District to Bexbach.
Explore Hiking and Cycling Routes
The Saarpfalz District is responsible for signposting tourist cycling routes. These include the Sieben-Weiher-Runde, the Adebar-Runde, the Bickenalb-Runde, the European Mill Cycle Route, the Bliesgau Cycle Route, the Glan-Blies-Weg, and the Vélo-Vis-à-vis network. This selection shows that cycling directions cover several named routes, but does not indicate any specific connection between individual sights. As signs and routes may be updated, it’s worth checking the latest information beforehand. Your trip’s particular interests can help you choose accommodation: castle and museum history, archaeological sites, orchid trails, or longer hikes and cycling tours.
