A Friday market, a Baroque palace with a local history museum and paths through a wooded valley give Wadern several distinct sides. When choosing accommodation, it is also helpful to consider whether you are more interested in local history, a bike ride or nature.
Market and Local History
Wadern’s Friday market offers fruit and vegetables, eggs, fresh bread and baked goods, meat, fish, delicacies and French specialities. Three stalls are run by local farmers. As both the market’s offerings and the stallholders may change, check the market day and what is on offer before your trip.
Dating from 1759, the Oettinger Schlösschen is Baroque and houses the town’s local history museum. The townscape also includes a traditional market square. Those interested in Wadern’s history therefore have two distinct points of interest: the museum in the palace and the market square as part of the townscape.
Castles and Castle Ruins
MĂĽnchweiler Palace is considered the only Baroque manor castle of its kind to have survived in the Saarland. Its 17 stations give visitors insights into the area around the palace. Dagstuhl Castle Ruins offer a different historical perspective: the castle was founded around 1270 by Knight Boemund of SaarbrĂĽcken. Today, bridges and historic paths allow visitors to walk around the castle grounds.
Costumed tours of the castle ruins offer insights into life at the castle in the past; availability may vary. A story-tour app lets children solve riddles about the ruins. The app’s availability may also change. If these experiences are important to your plans, check their current status in advance.
Bike Ride and Nature Trails
The “Around Wadern” e-bike tour is listed as 45.46 kilometres long, with a stated duration of three hours. It passes the Gallo-Roman monumental burial mounds near Oberlöstern. The route thus combines cycling with an archaeological point of interest along the way.
Those who would rather explore on foot can consider the trails in the Wahnbachtal nature reserve: they follow the Wahnbach stream through a wooded area. The bike tour and walks offer different ways to experience the landscape. At the Noswendeler See recreation centre, a 6.6-hectare lake is the main attraction.
Merzig-Wadern as a Wider Travel Destination
Beyond Wadern, the wider travel destination of Merzig-Wadern offers cultural points of interest of its own. In Perl-Borg, the reconstructed Roman Villa Borg is a Roman villa rustica with archaeological treasures. Guided tours are available in German, French, English, Dutch and Luxembourgish. In Merzig, machines in the fine-mechanics workshop of the Fellenberg Mill, dating from 1927, are still powered by water and demonstrated to visitors. These examples broaden the picture of the region, but are separate destinations in other locations.
