A sandstone railway station in the English Tudor style, a sculpture park and a historic copper mine represent different aspects of Beckingen. There are also trails through forests, across a shell limestone plateau and through gorges. To help plan your trip, consider what you would like to do: learn about architectural and industrial history, see art outdoors, or spend time on cycling and hiking trails?

Culture and Industrial History

Beckingen railway station is a listed sandstone building dating from 1858, built in the English Tudor style. Anyone interested in architecture and transport history will find a tangible link to the town’s history here.

The restored Old Beckingen Station houses the municipality’s tourist office and the information centre for the Wolferskopf nature reserve. The protected area covers 337 hectares. If you plan to visit either of these facilities, it is best to check the latest visitor information beforehand.

At the DĂĽppenweiler Historic Copper Mine, visitors can use a media terminal independently to learn more about the copper works and ore processing in the 18th century. Guided visits include the underground and above-ground facilities. The information available ranges from independent use of the terminal to guided tours of the facilities.

Bunker 766 at the Beckingen Bunker Museum serves as a documentation centre about the West Wall. Beckinger Talblicke offers another way to explore the town’s history: this short walk focuses on places of cultural and industrial significance and the history of Beckingen, and is associated with the Karcher family.

Nature, Art and Trails

Beckingen’s landscape is characterised by extensive forests and areas of largely untouched nature. The SaarGarten adds outdoor art to this side of the town, also serving as a sculpture park. At the entrance stands the sculpture Dreiländereck, created by Toun, an artist from Lorraine.

The SaarGarten trail network connects walkers, cyclists and runners to other Saar routes via the adjacent Leinpfad. For recreational cyclists, Beckingen offers the Saar-LĂĽckner Loop, the Saar Family Loop and the E-Velo Routes. The names describe different options; they are no substitute for checking the individual route and its conditions.

Two more trails have clearly distinct routes: the Panorama Höhenweg crosses the Merchingen shell limestone plateau from Saarfels to Hargarten and offers scenic views. The Litermont Legends Trail starts at the Historic Copper Mine in Düppenweiler and leads through forests, fields, meadows and pastureland, over bridges and through deep gorges. If you are planning a specific outing, it is advisable to check the latest trail conditions.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Beckingen is served by the Saarbrücken–Trier railway line and also has a boat landing. The landing provides access to the SaarGarten, the football golf course, cycling and hiking trails, and the Old Beckingen Station. If you are travelling by train, check the line’s current timetable in advance and plan your arrival around your itinerary.
