Merzig can be explored through a range of different themes: orchard meadows shape the landscape, while animal attractions and museums cover topics ranging from native species to industrial history. When choosing a hotel in Merzig, it helps to consider what you want to focus on during your stay. Some activities take place on set dates or require prior arrangements; others can be enjoyed as nature walks or cycling tours at your own pace.

Orchard Meadows and Habitats

Orchard meadows are among Merzig’s characteristic landscapes. They are also a long-standing cultural heritage and valuable habitats. Around 58,000 fruit trees grow in the municipality’s orchard meadows. At Nackberg, the NABU Apple Variety Garden welcomes visitors; it was established with support from the city.

At Blättelbornweiher, information boards introduce visitors to insects, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds. The habitats there support endangered species. Nature is therefore explored on different levels: as a traditional cultural landscape in the orchards and through a focused look at various animal groups at the pond.

Animal Attractions and Visitor Programs

The Wolf Park Werner Freund offers a free talk at the white wolf enclosure on the first Sunday of every month. Group tours are available by prior arrangement. Since visitor programs should be checked again before you travel, it is worth consulting the latest information if you plan to arrange your stay around a talk or guided tour.

At the Merzig Animal and Heritage Park, visitors can see native animals, including forest goats and sheep; there is also a large aviary. Guided tours focus on endangered domestic animal breeds and offer a behind-the-scenes look. You should confirm the availability of these programs before your trip. The activities differ in how they need to be planned: the talk at the wolf park takes place on a fixed monthly date, while group tours there and guided tours at the Animal and Heritage Park require prior arrangement or confirmation.

Viez, Workshop and Museum History

Viez is a regional apple wine associated with Merzig’s long tradition of apple growing and the Merzig Viez Festival. Every year on the first Saturday in October, the festival turns the town center into a Viez mile, with regional food stalls, Merzig Viez and music stages. Check the date and program for the relevant year before your trip.

The Fellenberg Mill Precision Engineering Museum preserves a working precision engineering workshop. It was established in 1927 in a former mill dating back to 1767. The Fellenberg Mill also documents the transition from artisanal production to industrial production and factory work. The two dates mark different periods: 1767 refers to the earlier mill, while 1927 refers to the establishment of the workshop.

The Merzig Psychiatric Museum explores the history of psychiatry and the former psychiatric hospital in Merzig through documents, photographs, audio recordings and film footage. Visits to the museum are possible only by prior arrangement with the staff. The Park of Independent Thinkers is open to visitors above the clinic. Visiting the museum therefore requires an arrangement, while the park is mentioned as a separate place above the clinic.

A Cycling Loop Along the Saar

A cycling loop of just over nine kilometers starts at Merzig-Stadtmitte station, follows the Saar to Besseringen and returns via Merzig harbor. Its starting point, riverside stretch and return route clearly define the stages of the loop. It complements the nature and culture themes with a concrete way to explore Merzig by bike.
