Wiesensee Lake shapes the choice of activities in Pottum: circular walks, water sports and insights into the village’s history offer different ways to spend your stay. If you’re looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether you’d like to spend most of your time by the water, hiking or exploring local culture.
Wiesensee Lake: Landscape and History
At around 80 hectares, Wiesensee Lake is an important landmark for Pottum, Stahlhofen am Wiesensee and Winnen. About 32 hectares of the lake lie within Pottum’s municipal area. The surroundings of the lake are part of the Secker Weiher/Wiesensee Landscape Conservation Area and include a bird sanctuary. The formation of the lake as it exists today can also be dated: the first trial impoundment took place in autumn 1969, and the lake was permanently impounded in 1971.
Circular Walks and Longer Routes
You can allow about an hour for a walk around Wiesensee Lake. The roughly six-kilometre loop around the lake is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users. Another route to consider at Wiesensee Lake is the Kleiner Wäller: an accessible circular hiking route of around 6.5 kilometres. Check trail conditions before setting out. If you’re looking for a longer route, you could consider the roughly 20-kilometre Grüner Steig und Seenweg, which explores Wiesensee Lake and its surroundings.
There are also different options for cycling: routes around Wiesensee Lake sit alongside longer rides through the Westerwald. For longer hikes in the Pottum area, the WesterwaldSteig is an option. This lets you plan short walks by the lake and longer outings separately, without combining them into a single route.
Water and Leisure by the Lake
Swimming, sailing and surfing are possible at Wiesensee Lake. The Palzhahn sunbathing lawn covers approximately two hectares. Its facilities include access to the water, a playground, a volleyball net, a kiosk, changing rooms and showers. Check which facilities are available before your visit.
There is also a sailing harbour in Pottum’s municipal area, with pitches for motorhomes. If you’re planning to use this option, check pitch availability in advance. In addition to water-based activities, Wiesensee Golf Course has an 18-hole course, a driving range and a 9-hole short course. Check its current operating status before travelling.
Village Centre and Cultural Discoveries
The St. Bartholomew’s Parish Church stands in the centre of the village. Its preserved old tower stands beside the newer church and parish centre; together, they form a focal point for local residents. The Theatre am Wiesensee also attracts audiences from well beyond Pottum.
Another historic detail is the house at Hermannsweg 1, which is listed as a cultural monument. The partly stone-built and slate-clad house features decorative half-timbering from the second half of the 18th century. Details like these add a cultural perspective on Pottum to your time by the lake, without requiring you to follow a set sightseeing itinerary.
Planning Information
The WällerLand Tourist Information Centre at Wiesensee Lake provides detailed visitor information in addition to information about the lake. Check its opening hours before visiting. You can use this information to bring different interests together in your day’s plans: a walk by the lake, time for water sports or a detour to explore the town’s cultural highlights. The right combination depends on how much time you’d like to spend on the trails, by the water and among village life.
