Those considering Korb as a destination for a stay can combine two interests: historic architectural styles and hiking trails. The protected heritage area on Hachenburger Straße brings the architecture to life; the stages of the Kölner Weg and the WesterwaldSteig offer different landscape highlights. For planning, it is worth considering these topics separately and then deciding which one should shape your stay.

Half-timbered houses and historic architectural styles

On Hachenburger Straße in Unnau-Korb, a protected heritage area includes a group of transverse houses dating from the 19th century. With the exception of number 16, they have their gable ends facing the street; the houses are half-timbered and some are clad. Gable-end orientation means that the gable side faces the street. This makes it possible to view the group in terms of its orientation, while the half-timbering and cladding offer further insight into the construction style.

One building with a former public function is the old school at Wiesenweg 3. The single-storey half-timbered building dates from 1878 and is clad in slate. Unnau-Korb’s architectural history also includes a railway station building with a goods shed from around 1885. Together, these buildings represent different purposes: homes, a school and a railway station building. They provide several tangible architectural points of reference for the town’s history.

Place name and former trades

A place name and former trades also add to the picture. Kalkofenseifen got its name from a lime kiln mentioned near Korb in 1697. Below Korb, an iron rolling hammer with wire drawing and a nail forge was in operation in 1725. The two historical traces differ: the lime kiln is associated with the name Kalkofenseifen, while wire drawing and a nail forge were part of the iron rolling hammer’s operations. This makes it possible to understand Korb’s history not only through its buildings, but also through its former commercial activities.

Hiking trails and their different highlights

One stage of the Kölner Weg starts at Unnau-Korb station. At the entrance to Korb, it runs along the Wäschbach and continues into the High Westerwald. It is considered a short, easy hike with numerous viewpoints and is also suitable for cyclists. Its starting point, route and described character give this stage a clear profile.

The WesterwaldSteig runs along meadow paths through the Wäschbachtal to Unnau-Korb. Along the way, views extend as far as Monsberg; Unnau-Korb is connected by rail. By comparison, this route focuses on the path through the valley and the views, while the Kölner Weg is defined by its start at the station and its route along the Wäschbach towards the High Westerwald. This makes it easy to distinguish the trails according to the route and landscape features that matter for your plans.
