A circular walk along the Wied near Mudenbach has a clear focus: The 8.59-kilometre route takes about 2 hours and 8 minutes and is considered moderately difficult. Along the way, fields, meadows and woodland alternate with river and mill connections; there are also views across the Westerwald.

Along the Wiedweg

The circular route follows the Wiedweg and passes the Marzauer MĂĽhle, fields, meadows and patches of woodland, the former KnochenmĂĽhle, the Wied and the Farrenauer MĂĽhle. The route thus combines varied landscape impressions with several connections to mills, without requiring a longer stage-by-stage plan.

The circular route is considered to be in good condition. Route information may change if paths are rerouted or conditions change. Therefore, check the current route before setting off on your walk.

Landscape and orientation

The Wied rises in the Westerwälder Seenplatte and forms part of the natural boundary along the borders with some neighbouring municipalities. Mudenbach is associated with the Kroppacher Schweiz, the Westerwälder Seenplatte and the Upper Wied Valley. Hiking, cycling, swimming and horse riding are among the leisure activities promoted in these landscape areas.

These offerings suit different ways of planning: a guided tour, maps for independent excursions or a programme for a group. Before travelling, check which dates and offerings are available.

Westerwald: Nature, history and long-distance trails

In the broader Westerwald destination, Stöffel-Park brings together industrial heritage, geological history and nature on the site of a former basalt quarry covering around 140 hectares. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel-Park displays fossils, including the famous Stöffel mouse, which document around 25 million years of geological history. Geological finds and the history of a former quarry site can be seen side by side here.

The landscape also offers different scales: the Westerwälder Seenplatte is a natural area with seven ponds. The Holzbachschlucht is a breakthrough valley about one kilometre long, with basalt walls up to 30 metres high. These regional natural attractions complement the picture of the Wied and its surroundings, but are not part of the Mudenbach circular walk.

The Westerwald offers a choice of different long-distance trails for longer hikes. The WesterwaldSteig is 235 kilometres long and divided into 16 stages; it is certified as a Quality Trail – Hiking in Germany and is one of the Top Trails of Germany. The Druidensteig runs for 94 kilometres over seven day stages through seven river valleys and features more than 30 geo-information points. The number of stages and the distance offer an initial comparison of the routes. Check the current route planner before setting out; certifications and geo-information may change.

Other cultural destinations in the Westerwald offer different points of interest. The Westerwald Ceramic Museum focuses on the history of working with clay; most of the objects on display originated in a Westerwald clay pit. Visitors can get creative themselves in the well-equipped museum workshop under expert guidance. In Hachenburg, restored half-timbered houses around the Alter Markt shape the historic town centre; the Löwenbrunnen fountain is also part of its historic character. The Hachenburg Erlebnis-Brauerei offers beer experience tours and brewing courses; individual dates can be arranged by phone. Check the current programme and booking conditions in advance.
