Explore Steinen via its three ponds, the circular cycling route and the forest playground. Brinkenweiher, Postweiher and Hausweiher are located in the Steinen area and are part of the Westerwald Lake District. This larger waterscape comprises seven ponds and pools; forests, wooded areas, reed beds, sedge marshes and wet meadows line the waters. This offers several different focal points for planning a trip: nature, activity and seasonal options by the water.

Ponds and natural environment

The Westerwald Lake District is an important resting and breeding area for birds. Its waters and diverse vegetation give the landscape its distinctive character. Nature enthusiasts will find a different focus here than on a cycling loop alone: the lake district is not just a series of bodies of water, but also an important habitat.

Swimming and pedal boating are available at Postweiher in summer. This is a seasonal reason to visit; check the current operating conditions before setting out. You can plan your time outdoors according to your interests: with an activity on the water or with a tour that uses the ponds as landmarks along the route.

Cycling and the forest playground

The Lake District Circular Cycling Route (I) passes through Steinen and runs between Postweiher and Brinkenweiher. The loop is 20.4 kilometres long and classified as easy. It is considered suitable for children, runs mostly on paved paths and requires no special skills. Its length, difficulty rating and surface provide concrete points of reference when choosing this cycling tour. As the route and rating may change, check the latest route information before setting out.

If you would rather plan a tour with a named destination than a cycling loop, consider the WesterwaldSteig adventure loop “Romantic Lake District”: it reaches the Steinen-Dreifelden Forest Playground. There are climbing, crawling, balancing, sliding and swinging activities on different levels. Shady benches provide parents and grandparents with a place to rest. The playground thus combines a variety of activities with an opportunity to take a break.

Barbecues and fires are prohibited at the forest playground because of the risk of forest fires. There is a free car park at the Steinen/Dreifelden Adventure Playground on Seeburger StraĂźe in Steinen. Facilities, rules and parking availability may change; check the latest information about the route and car park before your visit.

A historical connection

Steinen also has a specific historical connection: the Schönerler Treaty was signed here in 1665. This gives local history a distinct point of interest alongside the nature and activity options.

The Westerwald as a wider travel destination

The wider Westerwald travel destination offers more than the local ponds and cycling routes. The WesterwaldSteig is a 235-kilometre long-distance hiking trail through the Westerwald, with 16 stages. The Druidensteig runs for 94 kilometres over seven day stages through seven river valleys and features more than 30 geo-information points. These figures show how the scale differs from the 20.4-kilometre cycling loop in Steinen: here, multi-day regional hiking trails are contrasted with a single cycling loop.

Another highlight in the wider Westerwald travel destination is Stöffel Park. The approximately 140-hectare site of a former basalt quarry combines industrial heritage, geological history and nature. Fossils are displayed at the TERTIÄRUM in Stöffel Park, including the famous “Stöffel Mouse,” which documents around 25 million years of Earth’s history. Thus, alongside landscapes and hiking options, the Westerwald also offers geological history and industrial heritage as distinct themes.
