The Waldgeisterweg in the Otterbach Valley makes a distinctive impression with imaginative figures made from roots, tree stumps and tree trunks. Oberotterbach is known as an artists’ village; the local history museum and wine experiences also offer their own themes for your stay. You can choose between forest art, local history and wine.
Waldgeisterweg and wood art
The Waldgeisterweg in the Otterbach Valley is a woodland walk lined with carved figures made from roots, tree stumps and tree trunks. Oberotterbach is described as an artists’ village, and the figures vividly reflect this character. If you are particularly interested in carved figures, they are a clear focus when exploring the village.
Visitors can also visit the wood sculptor Volker Dahl’s residential gallery from 5 p.m. Please confirm access to the gallery in advance before planning your visit. This offers another way to include wood art in your travel plans, alongside the woodland walk.
Local history in the former schoolhouse
The Oberotterbach Local History Museum is housed in a former schoolhouse dating from 1829. Its exhibits span topics from Guttenburg and the mills through to the post-war period. They include archaeological finds, a clock from the Protestant church tower, rural life and wartime evacuations. The range of periods and objects gives visitors several ways to engage with local history. Check visiting arrangements before you arrive.
Wine experiences and local dining
Visitor experiences in Oberotterbach include wine tastings and wine walks, as well as tastings at wineries; there are also local restaurants and festivals. This gives you several options for enjoying wine and regional dining. If you want to plan your stay around a particular winery or event, check the participating wineries and festival dates separately.
The Southern Wine Route as a wider regional setting
The wider Southern Wine Route destination offers other nature and cultural attractions. The Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve and Nature Park. Landeck Castle has a 25-metre-high platform; when visibility is good, the view from there stretches across the Vorderpfalz towards the Odenwald and Black Forest. Replicas of the Imperial Regalia are on display at Trifels Imperial Castle.
The trails also vary in length and theme. The TrifelsErlebnisWeg is 3.6 kilometres long, one way, and features 18 play and information stations. The digital content at individual stations may change. The Keschde-Erlebnisweg is a 6.1-kilometre circular route around Föhrlenberg that is suitable for pushchairs and focuses on the Palatinate chestnut; seasonal conditions may affect access. At Silzer See, the climate and nature trail has two circular routes of different lengths exploring woodland, biodiversity, drinking water production and water retention. This lets you compare routes featuring play stations, a themed circular trail or a range of nature topics.
