Kapellen-Drusweiler combines the vineyard landscape of the Rose Garden hiking trail with a village history shaped by hop cultivation, churches, and historic farmsteads. If you are planning a stay, you will find a range of highlights here: time outdoors on a circular route or a closer look at the village’s architectural history.

Village character along the Erlenbach

Restored half-timbered houses and traditional winegrowers’ farmsteads shape the historic character of the village. Kapellen-Drusweiler lies in the green floodplain of the Erlenbach valley; storks are also part of this landscape. They use a nest in the floodplain near the village and breed there every year. As with wild animals, their presence is not guaranteed.

Fish can be seen in the restored Erlenbach, which is also home to three kingfishers. Here too, wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. If you would like to include nature and local history in your travel plans, you can explore this landscape as a highlight in its own right, alongside the historic buildings.

Rose Garden hiking trail and vineyards

The Rose Garden hiking trail is a circular route through the Rosengarten vineyard, south of Kapellen-Drusweiler. The FĂĽrstweg offers views over the vineyard-covered hills towards the Palatinate Forest. During the flowering season, more than 400 rose bushes line the rows of vines. Rose blossoms are seasonal, so if they are the reason you want to hike, take the timing into account when planning your trip.

The route includes the Keschdebusch with a pavilion and the return to the village along improved farm tracks. The roses also tell a story about the village’s viticultural past: historically, they served as an early-warning system for mildew on the vines. This practice has been preserved as part of the history of the Rosengarten. The circular route therefore brings together the landscape and a specific aspect of earlier viticulture.

Another option for cyclists is the “From Riesling to Zander” tour. It starts in Pleisweiler-Oberhofen, runs through vineyards along the Rosengarten, and continues to Kapellen-Drusweiler. The two routes have different starting points: the Rose Garden hiking trail is a circular route south of the village, while the cycling tour starts in Pleisweiler-Oberhofen.

From hop cultivation to village history

Hop cultivation also features in the village’s history, alongside the vineyards. Mennonite families introduced hops at the Deutschhof in 1792. This helped the village develop into a regional center of hop cultivation in the Palatinate. A historic hop field has been preserved. This provides a distinct historical counterpoint to the village’s viticultural character: the history of Kapellen-Drusweiler includes not only vines and winegrowers’ farmsteads, but also an important tradition of hop cultivation.

Churches and historic buildings

The Protestant parish church is a Baroque hall church built between 1717 and 1719; its Neo-Romanesque tower dates from 1865. The Protestant church also contains a rare Stumm organ dating from 1831, with gilded oak carvings. The Mennonite chapel at the Deutschhof is a hall church built in 1841.

Another architectural landmark is the former Protestant rectory at Dorfstraße 7. The hook-shaped complex was built from 1767 onwards and includes a late Baroque building with a hipped roof as well as a barn with a hipped roof. A conservation area with several 19th-century tombs is located on Kirchhofweg. These different architectural styles and dates offer specific points of reference for the village’s history, without grouping the individual buildings into a single period.
