Silz is located on Silz Lake in the Klingbach Valley, nestled in the landscape of the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of activities: trails and lakeside areas, the wildlife and hiking park, or hiking and cycling excursions towards the Palatinate Forest and Trifelsland.

Silz Lake and the nature discovery trail

Paths and lakeside areas around Silz Lake offer opportunities for strolling and relaxing. The Silz Lake Loop Climate and Nature Discovery Trail adds a tree trail, a water discovery station and a fish quiz. The SĂśW Erlebnis App also offers an Actionbound game and information in plain language. Digital features may change; check which activities are currently available before your visit.

Wildlife and hiking park for animal watching

The Southern Wine Route Wildlife and Hiking Park covers 100 hectares. You can observe more than 400 animals from 15 European species there. The park has short and long circular trails, a petting area and an adventure playground. You can tailor your visit to your interests—for example, focusing on animal watching, taking a walk or enjoying the play facilities. Animal numbers and park facilities may change over time; check the latest information before your visit.

Hikes and viewpoints

Nature Park Circular Trail 25 leads to the Abtskopf shelter and the Wasgaublick viewpoint. Nature Park Circular Trail 26 reaches the viewpoint at Schweinsfelsen via a steep but secured ladder. The two trails therefore differ in their destinations and in the ladder section on Route 26. Take the steep incline into account when choosing this route, and check current trail conditions before setting out; for Circular Trail 26, also check that the ladder is secured.

Silz is a starting point for hiking and cycling excursions in Trifelsland and the Palatinate Forest. Hikes lead towards Lindelbrunn, Berwartstein, Landeck and Madenburg. For cycling, the Klingbach Cycle Route runs towards the Rhine. These destinations offer different options for planning excursions, without requiring a shared circular route.

Local history and traditions

Main Street is associated with a monument to Pastor L. Karbeck, a crucifix and a stone cross dated 1823. West of Silz, a heritage conservation area includes a remnant of the Westwall: an anti-tank obstacle line several hundred metres long. The nickname “Schnecken” is associated with a wet meadow valley crossed by three watercourses. The Schneckekerwe festival is also linked to the traditional nickname. If you would like to include the local festival in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

Getting there and practical planning

The hiking car park by the sports ground is open to the public at all times. You can reach it by car or on bus route 531; check the bus timetable before setting off. Silz also has a motorhome parking area. Check locally before your trip to see whether it is available. For hikes, you should also follow the guidance for each route: this lets you account for the steep ladder at Schweinsfelsen when deciding whether to take Circular Trail 26.
