Buchet lies near the Belgian border in the Schneifel; parts of the Schneifel ridge are within the municipality. The Alfbach flows through the village, which is part of both the North Eifel Nature Park and the German-Belgian Nature Park. Several hiking trails and the village’s history offer different highlights for a stay.

The Schneifel Landscape and Panoramic Views

From the Dreiländerblick near Buchet, the panoramic view stretches from Bleialf and the Alfbach Valley across the Islek and Ösling and beyond the Our Valley. On clear days, visibility can extend as far as the High Fens in Belgium. Panoramic information boards identify visible sights, settlements and landscape features; benches offer a place to linger. As visitor facilities may change, check before your visit whether the boards and seating are still available as described.

Hiking Trails and the Bach-Pfad

Buchet has several well-developed hiking trails, including sections of the Matthiasweg–Maas-Rhein-Weg and the Way of St. James. Local trails head toward Schwarzer Mann on the Schneifel ridge. The Hemingway Trail is also highlighted among the walking routes in Buchet.

One clearly defined route is the 14-kilometer Bach-Pfad in NaturWanderPark delux. The circular trail connects Halenfeld and Bleialf and starts and ends at the sports field in Bleialf. It follows the Alfbach, Donsbach, Ihrenbach and DĂĽrenbach streams and runs along the Belgian border on some sections. The route includes two climbs and views across the Ardennes toward the High Fens. The Bach-Pfad is a premium trail certified with the German Hiking Seal and is described as a family-friendly circular route. Certification details may change; check current trail markers, conditions, route length and starting point before setting out.

House Frames and St. Barbara’s Chapel

House Frames is associated with two historical events. In the second half of September 1944, it housed the command staff of the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the 4th U.S. Infantry Division. Ernest Hemingway visited House Frames repeatedly as a war correspondent; a commemorative plaque recalls this connection.

At St. Barbara’s Chapel, the floor plan and roof shape stand out, modeled on a beech leaf. The chapel is connected with Buchet’s mining history; Saint Barbara is the patron saint of miners. House Frames thus represents the historical connection to Hemingway and the events of the war, while the chapel reflects the mining industry and a distinctive architectural form. In the wider travel destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm, the Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf Visitor Mine includes a mining trail with numerous information boards about the area’s mining history.

Getting There and Planning Your Accommodation

Buchet’s districts are connected to the regional road network via the K104 and K105; the village is also located between two exits on the A60. If you’re looking for a hotel in Buchet and planning to hike the Bach-Pfad, treat its starting point at the sports field in Bleialf as a separate destination for the day.
