Olzheim lies in an attractive landscape on the River Prüm. The river rises about six kilometres from the village, and the surrounding hills offer far-reaching views. Nature trails lead through fields and forests. Many trails are connected and suitable for multi-day hikes; connections and signage may change over time.

Choose Hiking Trails by Distance

For a shorter outing, the Gieren circuit is listed as 5.2 kilometres long. Route 19 covers 24 kilometres: it leads from Olzheim to the Wascheider Reservoir, passes through Kobscheid and Rohrvenn, and returns via Knaufspesch. Trail conditions and signage may change. At 11 kilometres, the Panorama Trail falls between these two distances; an elevation change of 170 metres is also listed. This gives you a choice of hikes of different lengths when planning, without the distance alone specifying how long a walk will take.

The Panorama Trail offers views across Olzheim and the surrounding countryside. The Olzheim hiking club introduced it in 2007; it was marked with new signs in 2019. A hiking shelter and a reclining bench were installed along the trail on Kalberberg in 2021. In winter, the panoramic tour can also be done as a snowshoe hike. Winter conditions vary from season to season.

Getting Your Bearings and Getting There

Official hiking car park 16 is in the village centre, next to the community hall. There is an information board with hiking maps and a box where you can pick up maps; maps can also be downloaded and printed. Bus routes 478 and 486 serve the car park. As bus services and timetables may change, check them before travelling.

Olzheim is accessible from the A1 and A60 motorways via the B51. Temporary roadworks or closures may affect travel by road. Olzheim is also considered a starting point for cycling and mountain biking; available route connections and access options may change.

A nearby landmark for hikers is the 697.8-metre-high Schwarzer Mann, the highest point in the Schneifel range. It can be reached from the area around Olzheim via various hiking trails. This lets you view the landscape around the village in the context of a larger mountain range, while the trails in and around Olzheim pass through fields and forests.

Chapels and History

The Marienkapelle (Chapel of St Mary) stands in Knaufspesch. It was built over a period of two and a half years, with 7,000 hours of volunteer work. It is intended for both church services and concerts; concert opportunities depend on the local programme. The Afelskreuz, southwest of Olzheim, is a late Gothic niche cross dating from 1613, located beside a country lane. The monument description was last updated in 2021.

The history of St Brictius also includes different dates: the church associated with the saint is dated to around 800, though this is a historical estimate rather than a confirmed construction date. The new church building was consecrated on 27 October 1924. Hikes through the countryside can thus be combined with insights into local architectural and church history.

If you are considering Olzheim as a place to stay, the different trail lengths can help you plan possible hiking days. The shorter loop, the Panorama Trail and Route 19 differ considerably in their listed distances; the connected trail network is another option for multi-day hikes. Before setting out, check the current connections and conditions, especially for longer routes or a planned winter hike.
