Ten audio stations along the Zellertal Trail offer insights into the work involved in winegrowing. There are also historic buildings, recurring festivals and wine tastings in Niefernheim. If you want to plan your trip around a specific occasion, consider the date as well as the location for the relevant travel year.

Winegrowing and Trails in Zellertal

The Zellertal’s vineyard landscape is cultivated across approximately 100 hectares. From the higher-lying district of Zell, you can enjoy a view over the vineyards. The Zellertal Trail opened in 2016 as the main hiking trail in Zellertal. It runs directly through the valley and can be used by hikers and cyclists.

Along the trail, ten audio stations explain the stages of winegrowing throughout the year and trace the journey from vine to wine. You can access the audio files at information boards by scanning QR codes with your smartphone. Each recording lasts two to three minutes. This lets you choose individual topics and listen to the explanations in short sections.

Village History and the St. Philip Pilgrimage

Zell is home to the small Baroque Church of St. Philip the Hermit, dating from 1749. In Harxheim, the historic town hall is another point of historical interest: it dates from the mid-18th century. These details offer two distinct architectural points of reference in the villages without requiring you to follow a set sightseeing itinerary.

The St. Philip pilgrimage in Zell has taken place since 1780 on the Sunday after May 3. It includes a motorcycle pilgrimage organized jointly with the Ottersheim motorcycle club Brothers in Arms. At times, more than 400 motorcycles take part; attendance can vary from year to year. If you are traveling for the pilgrimage, check the date for your chosen travel year.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The artists’ market takes place on the last weekend of June in winegrowers’ courtyards and on the streets. Its location alternates each year between Harxheim, Niefernheim and Zell. The Traditional Zeller Market is scheduled for the second weekend of September in Zell. Harxheim celebrates Haschemer Kerb every year on the fourth weekend of September. The two September events therefore fall on different weekends and take place in different villages. Check the dates for your travel year before planning your trip around them.

Wine Tastings and Getting Here

Weingut Schwan in Zellertal-Niefernheim offers wine tastings and winery tours. If you plan to take a tour, check availability in advance. This way, you can fit a possible winery visit around the actual date on offer rather than assuming it is a regularly available activity.

Bus routes 921 and 904 are listed as public transport connections to Zellertal. Check the current service before setting off. This practical check is especially useful if you want to coordinate your journey with a specific event or departure time.

The Wider Donnersbergkreis Area

The wider Zellertal, within the broader destination of Donnersbergkreis, offers a bigger-picture view of winegrowing: both Palatinate wine and Rheinhessen wine are grown there. The wider Zellertal is the only valley in Germany that encompasses two winegrowing regions. This regional perspective complements the local vineyards and the stations along the Zellertal Trail with a view of the wine landscape beyond the village itself.

The Zellertal Cycle Route is also part of this wider regional area. It is approximately 25 kilometres long and runs along the Pfrimm from the banks of the Rhine in Worms to Marnheim in Donnersbergkreis. This means that, in addition to the Zellertal Trail, which runs through the valley, you can also find information about a longer cycling route with named endpoints to help you orient yourself.
