Kalkofen lies between the valleys of the Alsenz and Appel, about two kilometres northeast of Alsenz. The village brings together a long history, traces of its former lime burning, and traditional village architecture. The main street is an important landmark: Kalkofen is a typical linear village, and the main street forms its central local axis.

Local History and Notable Details

Kalkofen was probably founded in the 9th century; the earliest documented mention dates from 1365. The founding date is a probability, while 1365 marks the earliest documented mention. The village’s name refers to the former importance of lime burning, and a lime kiln is also depicted on the municipal coat of arms.

An old vineyard cottage, privately preserved and fully renovated, adds to the village’s character. Old half-timbered and sandstone houses also shape the village’s appearance. The village fountain is designed in the shape of a lime kiln; a stone figure named Kalki has also been installed in the village. Together with the motif on the coat of arms, these details recall the village’s name, though they do not all serve the same purpose.

The present-day Protestant church was built between 1800 and 1803. Its round-arched windows are framed in sandstone. The site of the village church is also associated with a former St George’s Chapel, mentioned in records in 1460. The village’s appearance thus brings together different layers of history: the earlier mention of the chapel, the construction of the present-day church, and the older building styles of the houses.

Leisure, Activities and Events

Vockwiese includes a children’s playground, an event area and a barbecue area. If you plan to visit, check the site’s current condition beforehand. The local FC Kalkofen club offers recreational sports, yoga and hiking. As club activities may change, it is advisable to check what is currently available in advance.

The Kalkower Kerb includes dancing, a parade, a festival speech, a raffle, equestrian activities and fireworks. Culinary events include wine and bread as well as pizza days; vineyard cottage hikes are also among the events in Kalkofen. Dates and individual programme items may change. If a particular festival or activity is the deciding factor for your trip, check the latest dates in advance.

Accommodation and Local Character

Kalkofen has a winery with guest rooms. Before your trip, check whether it is available for your dates. On the main street, a baker fires up the communal oven. Vineyards and woodland shape the landscape around Kalkofen and give the village a strong connection to winegrowing and its rural setting.
