Rheine offers a variety of discoveries: a significant ensemble of technical monuments, a museum in a former noble residence, monastic history and diverse landscapes. When planning your trip, you can therefore first decide whether to focus on culture, observing nature or walking. Each of the attractions and landscapes offers its own themes, rather than simply different versions of the same excursion.

Saltworks, museum and monastic history

The preserved and renovated buildings of the Gottesgabe Saltworks form an ensemble unique across the wider region. They are among Westphalia’s oldest technical cultural monuments from the pre-industrial era. Rheine is therefore home to a site where the history of technical facilities is linked with a well-preserved collection of buildings.

The Falkenhof Museum offers a different perspective on the past. It is housed in a former noble residence and connects the history of the building with the history of the town of Rheine. It also features an extensive art collection and modern museum design. Art lovers will therefore find a different way to engage with the town here than by exploring the saltworks or monastic history.

The former Bentlage Monastery of the Canons Regular of the Holy Cross is located in the heart of a protected landscape area on the Ems. The cultural trail at the monastery explains the site’s history and architecture, as well as how it has changed over the centuries. It makes the site’s transformation a central theme: the building’s history and its historical development are intertwined here.

Landscapes between WaldhĂĽgel and the dunes

WaldhĂĽgel is the highest elevation in the town of Rheine. Rare flowers and plants, steep slopes and blue lakes characterize this nature reserve; from here, the view stretches across the MĂĽnsterland park landscape. WaldhĂĽgel is not a uniform forest, either: its mosaic includes relatively natural, little-disturbed areas, including woodruff and orchid beech forests. There are also limestone sites reclaimed by nature and a quarry lake.

The Elter Sand and Wildes Weddenfeld dune landscapes south of Rheine, near Elte, have a different character. The dunes were still shifting until the 20th century. Open areas of poor grassland and juniper heath are now rare; today, the area is covered with mixed pine forest. The landscape is ideal for hiking and walks. The difference from Waldhügel lies not only in the terrain but also in the landscape’s history: former shifting dunes and today’s woodland define the scene here.

Experience nature and explore connected themes

NaturZoo Rheine is home to Germany’s first monkey forest, where visitors can encounter Barbary macaques living almost freely. Along the forest adventure trail, they can also examine animal tracks on the forest floor and identify different tree species. A visit to the zoo can thus be combined with attentive nature observation. Visitor rules and access conditions may change, so check them before your visit.

The Bentlage recreation area also brings together nature and cultural themes, with three routes focused on salt, nature and the monastery. This lets you choose a focus without treating the themes as interchangeable. The saltworks represent technical heritage, the monastery area offers architecture and history, and the landscapes provide a different view of Rheine’s surroundings.

These different interests can be a practical guide when choosing a hotel in Rheine: first consider whether you want to devote your stay primarily to cultural sites, nature observation or walks. You can then plan the order of your activities without presuming a particular route or length of stay.
