When staying in Lengerich, you can choose between nature trails and cultural heritage sites as different focal points. The canyon offers hikes of varying lengths; there is also a circular route around the quarry, field railway history and places of remembrance with very different historical associations. Which ones you include in your plans depends on the themes you want to focus on during your trip.

Hiking at the Canyon and around the Quarry

The “Canyon Blick” Teutoschleife is an eleven-kilometre circular hiking trail between Lengerich and Leeden that leads to the Canyon nature reserve. It has been awarded the German Hiking Seal and is part of the Tecklenburger Land premium hiking region. A shorter option is the Canyon Tour: this approximately five-kilometre premium walking trail runs around the canyon. Three viewing platforms offer different views of the protected area. The two options therefore differ in both length and the kind of experience described.

Another circular route runs for eight kilometres around the Lengerich quarry. A wide variety of plants and striking limestone walls are among the landscape features described here. Information boards explain the landscape around the quarry in the TERRA.vita Nature and Geopark. You can choose the route according to its particular focus: canyon views and the protected area on the two canyon trails, or quarry scenery with plants, limestone walls and information boards.

Cycling and Getting There

There is also a clearly defined option for cycling: the Friedensroute is a circular cycling route between MĂĽnster and OsnabrĂĽck that leads directly into Lengerich town centre. It is certified as a four-star ADFC quality cycle route. This is a different way to include Lengerich in your travel plans than taking one of the local hiking trails.

Lengerich is accessible by train. The station is about 2.5 kilometres from the town centre, and there is also a bus connection. If you are planning your accommodation and daily itinerary around public transport, check the connections for your travel date.

Field Railway History and Historic Sites

The Westphalian Field Railway Museum in Lengerich documents the history of field railway transport and presents an extensive collection. The visitor experience also includes a short ride on a restored field railway. The museum thus brings together transport history and a ride on a historic railway.

The Evangelical Town Church in Lengerich offers a specific architectural point of reference: its nave was completed in 1497 in the Late Gothic style as a Westphalian hall church. The Wechte megalithic tomb is about 4,000 years old; it was discovered in 1927 and partially reconstructed. These two sites represent very different periods in Lengerich’s history.

The Jewish cemetery is the only surviving evidence of the former Jewish community and Jewish life in Lengerich. Its history dates back to the 18th century. The Old Railway Tunnel is also one of the town’s places of remembrance: from March 1944 until shortly before the end of the war, it was an outpost of the Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg, under the code name “Rebhuhn.” The tunnel is inaccessible because it is in a severely dilapidated condition.

The former Haus Vortlage manor was first mentioned in the 13th century. The private estate comprises a mill, an oak avenue, a moat and a main house; it is also a listed monument, association headquarters, foundation and meeting place. The water castle is stated to be open from March to November. On Sundays, the art café serves coffee and cake from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Check seasonal opening hours and Sunday hours before planning your visit.

At the Haus Beccard local history centre, exhibits include displays about life and work in a small town with a rural character. Visits are possible by appointment. The Old Town Hall houses the tourist information office, the town library and the municipal archive.
