Visitors to Wipperfürth who want to combine historic architecture with routes through the Bergisches Land will find two distinct focal points for a stay. The town centre preserves the layout of its 14th-century predecessor. At the same time, the town lies directly on the Wupper and is surrounded by reservoirs. You can therefore focus your time more on the town’s history or on cycling and hiking routes.

Old Town and Architectural History

The preserved layout of the town dates back to the 14th century, while individual buildings and structures mark other periods. Gasthaus Penne and Altes Stadthaus are the two oldest houses beside the market square to have survived the town fire of 1795. Altes Stadthaus was built around 1780. The town acquired the building in 1975; it was later fully restored. Its construction, the fire and its restoration therefore belong to different periods in its history.

The market fountain is an octagonal basalt fountain dating from 1331. The monastery complex comprises a church and a four-winged monastery building, constructed between 1670 and 1674. Together with the town layout dating back to the 14th century and the town hall from around 1780, these provide several points of reference from different periods. Visitors interested in architecture and local history can use these dates to orient themselves among the different building phases.

Hiking and Landscape

The Wupper and the surrounding reservoirs shape Wipperfürth’s connection to the landscape. The Rund um Wipperfürth hiking route passes through wooded, hilly terrain; reservoirs and expansive views are also part of the route’s character. The landscape is the main focus of this tour, while the historic town centre offers a different focus. If you would like to include both in your trip, you can plan the architectural sights and the hike as separate activities rather than treating them as an unverified fixed route.

Cycling: Kirchdörfer and Railway Track

The Kirchdorfradweg consists of four cycling routes. Each starts and ends at the Ohler Wiesen car park in Wipperfürth and leads to the surrounding Kirchdörfer. The four outer sections can be combined to make a loop of around 59 kilometres around Wipperfürth. It passes through the gently rolling landscape of the Bergisches Land and offers beautiful views. The individual routes and the combined loop provide different options for planning a cycling trip; no specific travel time is stated.

The Wasserquintett Bahntrassenweg is a separate route: it follows a former railway line of the Wippertalbahn and has a maximum gradient of two per cent. Surfaces and conditions may change, so check the current route conditions before setting out. There is an e-bike charging station at the town hall on the market square. The Ecumenical Initiative also rents out cargo bikes and tandems; some cargo bike models are equipped with child seats. If you plan to use these options, check their current availability in advance.

Other Practical Points

The weekly market offers, among other things, fruit, vegetables, eggs, spices and fish. Market times and the range of goods may change, so check these details before planning your visit. This can add a specific interest in the regional market scene to your stay without tying your visit to an unconfirmed day of the week.
