In Reichshof, juniper areas, a forest nature trail and a historic watermill offer a range of discoveries. You can combine views of the landscape with a guided hike or a circular trail, and also visit a historic site. For further planning, it is also worth looking at additional excursion and route ideas in the wider Oberbergischer Kreis destination.

Juniper heaths and forest trails in Reichshof

Juniper areas can be found in Branscheid, Wildberg and Hespert; hikers can visit the juniper heaths there. Free guided hikes are offered several times a year, providing information about the juniper heath. If you would like to join a guided hike, check the dates in the current brochure on guided hikes. This lets you explore the landscape on an informative hike, while the forest nature trail offers a different way to get outdoors.

The forest nature trail is a 4.5 km circular route through the forest. Information boards make it an educational trail, while benches and shelters offer places to take a break. The start and finish are in Reichshof. The circular route gives the trail a clear structure, without requiring a particular walking time or pace. When planning your walk, you can factor the distance and the available rest stops into your schedule.

A historic landmark in Nespen

In Nespen, above the Wiehl Dam, stands the old watermill, first mentioned in 1749. It adds a historical point of interest to the nature and walking experiences. The date places the mill within a long history; when exploring Reichshof, you can therefore enjoy both the landscape and hiking trails and a historic site with a specific date.

Oberbergischer Kreis: more excursion options

The wider Oberbergischer Kreis destination offers additional ideas for nature, culture and route planning. A notice from Oberbergischer Kreis dated 19 May 2026 lists a total of 13 official bathing sites for the swimming season at the Aggertalsperre, Bevertalsperre, Bruchertalsperre and Lingesetalsperre reservoirs. The notice states that water quality meets the requirements of the EU Bathing Water Directive and is regularly monitored throughout the season. Check the current season status before planning a day of swimming.

For hikers, five Bergisches Land hiking maps show the complete current hiking trail network of the Rheinisch-Bergischer and Oberbergischer districts and help with route planning. Check the relevant map edition before purchasing. The district also has something to offer those interested in culture: at the LVR open-air museum in Lindlar, craftspeople demonstrate traditional craft techniques that change daily.

Among the hiking trails, the Höhenroute showcases beautiful landscapes and the unique views from the hilltops that give it its name. It starts at the Nümbrecht Kurpark hiking car park, is signposted throughout and can also be navigated using GPS via Outdooractive. Check the route information before setting off. The Klangpfad in the Homburger Ländchen offers a different experience, where you can enjoy stillness and the sounds of nature. The original Klangpfad was developed by the municipality of Nümbrecht together with the Biologische Station Oberberg.

There are also dedicated cycling route options at district level. The Wasserquintett cycle route starts and ends at Marienheide station; many sections follow disused railway lines with gentle gradients and are suitable for e-bikes and touring bikes. Conditions and signage may change, so check them before your ride. The Talsperrenroute passes four reservoirs and runs through the region around Marienheide, WipperfĂĽrth and HĂĽckeswagen. Three audio features provide information about the flora, fauna and animal habitats around the reservoirs.
