Engelskirchen offers several different discoveries: in Ründeroth, explore cave geology and a designated hiking trail; in Bickenbach, discover historic blacksmithing. In town, the Ermen & Engels hydroelectric power plant adds another chapter to the region’s industrial history. When planning your stay, it is therefore worth first considering what you want to focus on: visible fossils, craftsmanship in action or industrial heritage. Each attraction has its own visitor arrangements; be sure to check dates before you travel, especially for seasonal opening hours.

Cave and Hiking Trail in RĂĽnderoth

The Aggertal Cave in Engelskirchen-RĂĽnderoth is open from April 1 through November 1, Thursdays to Sundays and on public holidays. Fossils of rugose and tabulate corals can be seen in the cave. If you are interested in the geological side of the area, this offers a different focus from a walk through the landscape: the cave provides a glimpse of fossils, while the 8.4 km Cave Trail, Bergischer Streifzug #14, runs through Engelskirchen-RĂĽnderoth. However, the fact that both attractions are in the same place does not make them a single route; opening hours and trail length are separate planning considerations.

Specific seasonal visiting days are listed for the cave, so you should check them again before setting out. Availability or the stated length of the Cave Trail may change, so check the latest information before you start. If you are planning your time carefully, decide separately whether to visit the cave and whether the trail also fits into your stay.

Blacksmithing and Industrial History

The Oelchenshammer in Engelskirchen-Bickenbach is a fully preserved complex more than 200 years old and one of the last water-powered forge hammers from the pre-industrial era in the Oberbergisches Land region. Blacksmith demonstrations take place at the Oelchenshammer, and children and adults can take part in blacksmithing workshops. From April to October, the complex is regularly open on Sundays and on special occasions such as German Mill Day. The season and specific opening days make a visit here different from the opening days listed for the Aggertal Cave. Check the dates if you would like to include both places in your plans.

The difference is also one of focus: fossils take center stage in the cave, while the Oelchenshammer is about blacksmithing and a preserved water-powered complex. This lets you choose between the local attractions based on your interest in geology or historic crafts, rather than treating them as similar sights. The historic Ermen & Engels hydroelectric power plant adds the use of electricity to this picture: from 1903, it supplied the factory and, for a short time, parts of the town with electricity. Today, it is one of eight sites belonging to the LVR Industrial Museum. Its historic role as a power plant distinguishes it from the blacksmithing tradition at the Oelchenshammer; no visiting schedule is provided here for the power plant.

More Things to Do in the Oberbergischer Kreis

If you are planning a trip beyond Engelskirchen, the Oberbergischer Kreis offers other distinct experiences. The Höhenroute (Highland Route) takes its name from the beautiful landscape and unique views from the ridges. It starts at the Nümbrecht Kurpark hiking car park, is signposted throughout and can also be navigated using GPS with Outdooractive. Check the route information before setting out, as the trail route and navigation details may change.

The Wasserquintett cycling route starts and ends at Marienheide station. Many sections follow disused railway lines with gentle gradients and are suitable for e-bikes and touring bikes. This calls for a different kind of route planning than the Höhenroute. The Talsperrenroute (Reservoir Route) passes four reservoirs; three audio segments provide information about the flora, fauna and animal habitats around the reservoirs. The route runs through the area around Marienheide, Wipperfürth and Hückeswagen. Route conditions and signage may change; check the information before setting out.

Swimming spots are another seasonal consideration in the Oberbergischer Kreis. A notice about the swimming season dated May 19, 2026, lists a total of 13 official bathing sites at the Aggertalsperre, Bevertalsperre, Bruchertalsperre and Lingesetalsperre reservoirs. According to the notice, water quality met the requirements of the EU Bathing Water Directive and was monitored regularly throughout the season. Check the latest seasonal notice before visiting.
