The Eckenhagen Monkey and Bird Park is home to more than 180 different animal species; the number may change over time. The pump track, spa park and historical collections also help shape what the area has to offer. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Eckenhagen, you can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on wildlife watching, exercise or local history.
Wildlife Park and Exercise
Many enclosures at the Monkey and Bird Park are open to visitors, including walk-through free-flight aviaries and monkey enclosures. The availability of individual enclosures may vary depending on the park’s status and conditions. If you plan to visit specific areas, check the latest visitor information in advance.
The Eckenhagen pump track is on Hahnbucher StraĂźe, to the right of the sports field. It is 280 metres long and features two circuits: one is designed for children aged three to eight using balance bikes and bicycles, while the larger circuit is for ages eight and up. The pump track is freely accessible daily from 06:00 to 22:00.
History and Collections
The Eckenhagen Historical Trail presents local history on 15 information boards; each stop offers further information via a QR code. The farm museum, housed in a half-timbered building converted into a museum, shows how local people lived over the past 200 years. The adjacent bakehouse offers insight into agricultural work. More than 4,000 objects illustrate how people once lived and worked on the farm.
The Doll’s House Museum features an extensive collection of traditional costume and folk dolls from around the world. Its exhibition is wheelchair accessible and offers an educational programme as well as regular guided tours. The mining exhibition covers mining history, the daily lives of miners, and geographical and technical aspects of the mining tradition and coin minting. On display are a reconstructed mine entrance, a photo wall, minerals, miners’ lamps and everyday objects in display cases.
Organ concerts are held regularly at the Evangelical Baroque Church in Eckenhagen. If attending a concert is important for your visit, check the latest event dates.
Spa Park and Hiking Options
The approximately 1.5-hectare Eckenhagen Spa Park features a large pond and fountain complex surrounded by benches and forest sofas. The park also has a barefoot path and an adjacent Kneipp water-treading pool. Regular spa concerts and other events take place in the music pavilion.
The Heilklimaweg 1 (Yoga Hiking Trail) starts and ends at Eckenhagen Spa Park on Zöper Weg in Reichshof-Eckenhagen. The route has five stations; guided hikes are also offered along the way.
A Circular Route Through Several Places
The Reichshof-Erleben-Tour starts in Eckenhagen, passes through Wildbergerhütte and Denklingen, and returns to Eckenhagen. It uses a minibus with eight passenger seats and follows particularly beautiful, scenic “forgotten” routes that have become economically unviable for regular buses.
In the Wider Destination of Reichshof
In the wider destination of Reichshof, there are juniper heath areas in Branscheid, Wildberg and Hespert. Free guided hikes with information about the juniper heath are offered several times a year. Check the latest hiking brochure for specific dates. Another circular trail in Reichshof is the 4.5-kilometre forest nature trail through the woods, with information boards, benches and shelters. The old watermill in Nespen was first mentioned in 1749.
