Ründeroth offers several distinct highlights for an exploration: the Cave Trail is a circular hiking route, the Aggertal Cave focuses on the history of the Earth, and from Haldy Tower you can look out over the Agger Valley and across to the Mucher Plateau. Other attractions include the Evangelical Church in the town centre and the traditional May fair. Depending on whether you want to focus on the landscape, geology, views or local history, you can shape your stay in different ways.

Nature, River and Views

The Weinberg nature reserve lies north of Ründeroth in the municipality of Engelskirchen, on an outer bank of the Agger. An outer bank is the outside of a river bend; the nature reserve’s location is therefore defined both by its connection to the local area and by its relationship to the river.

Above Ründeroth, 96 steps lead up to the viewing platform of Haldy Tower. From there, you can look out over the Agger Valley and across to the Mucher Plateau. The tower was built in 1903 using funds raised through a collection among local residents. This destination combines scenic views with a tangible part of local history.

Hiking and Cave History

The “Cave Trail” (Streifzug #14) is a circular hiking route that runs mostly along paths as well as forest and farm tracks. A total of 10 information boards and 2 audio stations complement the route. This makes the hike different from the viewpoint at Haldy Tower: the circular route, varied types of paths and interpretive stations are all part of the Cave Trail experience.

The “First Look” guided tour at the Aggertal Cave in Ründeroth gives visitors an initial overview of the cave’s geological history. Another option is the treasure hunt programme for children’s birthday parties, designed for groups of 6 to 9 children. The two formats have different focuses: one explores the geological history, while the other offers a treasure hunt as part of a birthday programme.

Local History and Tradition

The Evangelical Church is in the centre of Ründeroth and has a history spanning around 850 years. Together with the traditional May fair held in Ründeroth, it adds cultural context to the nature and cave themes. The church and the fair offer two different points of interest: the long history of the church and a traditional festival.
