In Rommerskirchen, there is plenty to discover, from cycling and hiking trails to Roman history and museums. The Bahndammweg trail follows a former railway line through several named places to Neuss; in the Gillbach floodplain, the Archaeological Window showcases a historic Roman canal. For planning, it is worth considering the different highlights: trails open up the landscape, while cultural attractions tell the story of the town and region.

Cycling and hiking

The Bahndammweg runs from Eckum through Butzheim, Nettesheim, Frixheim and Anstel, via HĂĽlchrath, to Neuss. Its route follows a former railway line. The trail offers a quiet, safe route for cyclists, walkers and families.

The Bruchrandweg trail focuses on changing landscapes and scenic views. It runs along the transition from the low-lying area to the fertile loess region, offering panoramic views across fields, villages and the course of the Gillbach. As part of the regional cycling network, it is suitable for longer family bike rides; there are places to rest along the way. If you value a former railway line and several named places when cycling, the Bahndammweg offers just that. The Bruchrandweg is defined by the transition between the low-lying area and the loess region, its views and places to rest.

For a hike, the Gillbachaue Nature Trail follows the Gillbach from Gill to Villau. Its route takes into account the protected zones required for wildlife conservation. These designated protected areas are therefore part of navigating the route.

Archaeology, local history and museums

The Archaeological Window on Romaricusweg in the Gillbach floodplain in Rommerskirchen offers a view of a historic Roman canal as part of a permanent exhibition. The Romans built it to drain a villa rustica. The window therefore focuses on a specific example of Roman drainage history.

The Eckum Historical Trail was introduced in 2014 and designed largely by Paul-Rolf Essel. Its 35 location markers feature short explanatory texts. Additional signs with text, images or maps have been installed at particularly important buildings and landscape features. Unlike the Archaeological Window, the historical information here is spread across a series of marked locations.

The Sinsteden Cultural Centre of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss is located in the district of Sinsteden. The district’s Agricultural Museum and the Ulrich Rückriem Sculpture Halls are situated next to each other there. The Agricultural Museum displays historic agricultural machinery and tractors in a permanent exhibition in a hall measuring around 3,000 m². If you are planning a museum visit, check the opening hours directly with the museum.

The archive in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss also offers a way to explore the history of the municipality: it has been responsible for Rommerskirchen since early 2013 and regularly holds talks, guided tours and other events in or for Rommerskirchen. The programme is open to all residents; dates for individual events may vary.

Activities at the Sonnenbad

The Sonnenbad team offers play mornings for children featuring a large aquatic animal. Courses such as aqua fitness are also available. As the course programme may vary, check with the Sonnenbad in advance for current dates. During the summer months, a neighbouring sunbathing lawn adds to the facilities. It is a seasonal option and should be taken into account as such when planning.
