Dormagen offers a variety of discoveries for a stay: visible traces of the Roman fort of Durnomagus, historic places in Zons and nature experiences in the Tannenbusch. Cyclists will also find plenty of options. When choosing your destination, you can decide whether you want to focus on exploring history, spending time outdoors or combining both.

Roman Heritage in Dormagen

The Roman cavalry fort of Dormagen, known in antiquity as Durnomagus, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Lower German Limes. Its history can be seen in several places: the foundations of the fort are marked in the paving in front of the historic town hall. A former Roman road also runs beneath the pedestrian zone on Kölner Straße.

A Roman museum in the old town hall features a model of the fort and, among other things, a cavalry mask. The exhibition about the Roman provisions cellar focuses on everyday life in the camp village, covering housing, work, religion and worship. As information about museum access may change, check the latest visitor information before making plans.

The Roman Garden is located between the two town halls. It is open at all times and serves as a historical learning and meeting place for the whole family. Explanatory tombstones and votive stones, as well as a timeline, bring Dormagen’s Roman history to life there. Nevertheless, check the latest access information before your trip.

Zons: Towers, Crafts and Theatre

Distinctive buildings in Zons tell stories from different periods. The Rhine Tower dates back to 1388. The windmill still has its original wooden milling mechanism from the 17th century. The KreisMuseum Zons complements these architectural landmarks with a collection: its Art Nouveau pewter collection comprises around 1,800 individual pieces from 20 German and international companies.

Recurring cultural events are also part of what the town has to offer. The annual fairy-tale performances take place on the open-air stage in the Zwinger of the former Friedestrom Castle and are popular beyond the region. Zons thus brings historic buildings together with a regular tradition of performances; if you are planning a specific visit, it is worth checking the latest dates.

Knechtsteden: Orchard and Trails

Numerous well-maintained cycling and hiking trails around Knechtsteden pass through woodland and fields. The orchard at Knechtsteden Abbey is another attraction: more than 300 fruit trees grow there, representing 120 apple, pear, plum and cherry varieties typical of the Rhineland. The abbey also hosts the annual “Alte Musik” festival. Nature trails, fruit varieties and music offer different ways to enjoy a stay.

Nature Experiences in the Tannenbusch

The Tannenbusch, covering around 100 hectares, offers a wide range of nature education opportunities. On the “Spurensuche” nature trail, eleven stations introduce visitors to nature and environmental topics with information presented in a child-friendly way. If you are more interested in rocks, the geopark has a short circular trail featuring prominent landscape-forming rocks and large information boards. The two attractions focus on different subjects: nature and environmental knowledge in one, geological topics in the other.

The approximately three-kilometre fitness trail in the Tannenbusch has a range of fitness and climbing equipment. The geopark and nature trail offer different experiences from the fitness trail.

Cycling Routes and the Straberg-Nievenheim Lake

Two long-distance cycle routes pass through Dormagen. The Kaiser Route runs from Aachen to Paderborn. The Rhine Route is a cycle route along the Lower Rhine and also passes through Dormagen. The two routes differ in their stated focus and course; which one suits you depends on which stretch you would like to include in your trip.

Straberg-Nievenheim Lake is centrally located within the city and is known, among other things, for its water-skiing facility. It is connected to a cycling network and can be reached on foot, by car and by public transport. Check current connections when planning your journey. This makes the lake another place to visit in Dormagen, alongside the Roman sites, cultural attractions and trails around Knechtsteden.
