Meerbusch brings together several distinct themes for trip planning: the Rhine landscape, cycling tours, protected nature and cultural attractions in individual districts. The eleven-kilometre Rhine waterfront stretches from BĂĽderich in the south to Nierst in the north. Visitors exploring the area by bike can choose between a route across the city and a circular tour around the entire city area.

The Rhine and cycling routes

The Rhine dike cycle path crosses Meerbusch from the Krefeld city boundary in the north to the Düsseldorf city boundary near Lörick in the south. The 38-kilometre City-Country-River route starts at Osterath station and loops around the entire city area. This offers a choice of different route types: a north–south crossing or a full circuit around Meerbusch. The city also has around 70 kilometres of cycle paths and 150 kilometres of mostly smoothly paved farm roads.

Nature at Latumer See

The Latumer See area was transformed into a local recreation and landscape conservation area in the 1980s. Visitors can walk around the lake and take a break on wooden platforms by the water; joggers use a circular route. Swimming and boating are prohibited at Latumer See. You can therefore plan a walk, a break by the water or a jogging circuit here, but not swimming or boating.

Nature is also part of Meerbusch’s local character. Numerous animal and plant species have a home in the woodland and fields around Latumer See. The Ilvericher Altrheinschlinge provides a refuge for rare animal and plant species. These natural areas complement the Rhine waterfront with different types of landscape, while the activities at the lake should not be confused with the area’s special protected habitats.

Culture and history

The Forum Wasserturm in the heart of the Lank-Latum district offers cabaret, variety performances, comedy, theatre, cinema and concerts. One seasonal planning reference is the performance season of the “Lotumer Buretheater”: it begins every year in October and features theatre in the local Platt dialect. If you would like to plan your stay around a performance, check the specific dates in advance.

Among the historic sites is Gut Dyckhof, a moated castle complex first documented in 1393. The Teloy Mill in Lank-Latum is the only mill in the Meerbusch city area with fully restored sails. Today it is used as an exhibition venue and meeting place. It is also an example of how a historic building can serve a cultural purpose today.

The park of Haus Meer, together with the foundations of the old carriage house, the garden pavilion known as the “Tea House,” the ice cellar, the enclosure wall, the remaining foundations and the vaulted cellar of the former Meer monastery, forms a listed ensemble. The Alter Kirchturm memorial is considered Joseph Beuys’s only complete work of art in a public space outside a museum setting. The two places offer different points of interest: one is an ensemble of parkland and monastery remains, the other a standalone work in public space.

Plan more activities

The grounds of the Arche Noah youth farm include animal houses, animal enclosures, aviaries, ponds with bridges and boardwalks, a pony-riding track, and play areas with swings, slides, carousels and ride-on vehicles. The facilities range from areas for animals to various play options. Check the visitor information in advance when planning your visit.

The modern ferry “Michaela II,” operated by the Meerbusch-based Schäfer ferry family, now makes the crossing on the Langst-Kaiserswerth Rhine ferry. If you plan to take the ferry, check the current timetable before setting off. You can then tailor your choices in Meerbusch to your interests: a cycling tour, a natural area, a cultural event or a historic ensemble.
