Hoheleye is a small mountain village on the ridge of the Rothaar Mountains, offering magnificent views. There are several different focuses to choose from when planning your trip: longer hiking routes, a winter hiking trail, a cross-country ski trail and the history of the hilltop villages. This lets you plan your stay around your preferred activity and the season.

Hiking: Routes with Different Destinations

The Rothaarsteig public transport tour from Hoheleye to Bad Berleburg railway station is 15.6 kilometres long. It starts at the “Girkhäuser Straße” stop in Winterberg-Hoheleye and passes some of the sculptures on the WaldSkulpturenWeg trail, as well as the Rothaarsteig suspension bridge. If you would like to include these cultural and landscape highlights in your hike, you will find them along the route. If you plan to travel to the route by bus, check bus services and timetables in advance.

The eighth stage of the Winterberger Hochtour also leads to Hoheleye: it runs from Mollseifer Hof in Mollseifen to Hoheleyer Hof. This offers additional waypoints to choose from when planning a hike, alongside the Rothaarsteig public transport tour.

Winter Trails and Cross-Country Skiing

There are two different options for winter days. The premium winter hiking trail “Grenzweg Kahler Asten – Langewiese – Hoheleye” is 6.6 kilometres long and leads to Hoheleye. As conditions can vary by season, check them before setting out. The Hoheleye cross-country ski trail is 7.991 kilometres long, with an elevation profile that includes 125 metres of ascent and 125 metres of descent. The climbs offer views of the Lenne and Odeborn valleys.

The routes differ in terms of activity and elevation profile: the winter hiking trail leads to Hoheleye, while the designated elevation gain and views of the valleys are details to consider when planning a cross-country ski outing. So decide whether you would prefer to include a hike or a cross-country ski trail in your winter plans.

Hilltop Village and Regional History

Hoheleye is believed to have developed gradually as one of the hilltop villages on the Rothaar Ridge. Hoheleye remained a settlement of just three farms; the newly established Kanondörfer were almost exclusively charcoal burners’ settlements. Wooden goods also form part of the history of the hilltop villages as a whole: during the long, cold winter months, people mainly made spoons, bowls and other wooden goods from maple wood at home.

The wider destination of Winterberg also offers other activities. In the Winterberg Trail Park, the “Family First” loop is aimed at trail beginners and families who want to get their first experience on trails. The Skiliftkarussell Winterberg offers 44 kilometres of downhill runs on groomed slopes, as well as modern chairlifts. These options add to the range of activities in the Winterberg destination, while the hiking trails and cross-country ski trail mentioned above focus on Hoheleye.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Hoheleye, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: a longer hike, a winter day on a cross-country ski trail or hiking trail, or the history of the hilltop villages. Check the specific accommodation details in each listing before making your decision.
