Neuastenberg offers a variety of activities for a stay: a nature and adventure rally, signposted circular walks, the nature climbing park and winter activities. The route lengths provide a useful basis for comparison when planning: the rally is 3 km long, and the two circular walks are 6 and 7 km. There is also the West German Winter Sports Museum and Postwiese, with its own winter activities. You can focus on nature, exercise or winter sports.

Culture, climbing and nature

The West German Winter Sports Museum opened in 1998 in Winterberg-Neuastenberg at the foot of the Kahler Asten. The Steinkuhle Nature Climbing Park is located in Neuastenberg near the biathlon stadium; it has 16 climbing routes and opened on 23 September 2012. The museum’s connection to winter sports and the climbing facility offer different ways to explore the area.

The 3 km nature and adventure rally runs around Gerkenstein, Neuastenberg’s local mountain. At 19 stops, you can learn about nature, the landscape and interesting facts about the highland villages of Neuastenberg and Lenneplätze. The rally is shorter than the two circular walks, N1 and N2, and its stops connect the route with topics relating to these villages.

Circular walks with different distances

The signposted N2 – Hoher-Knochen-Weg circular walk is 7 km long. It passes through the valley of the young Lenne and over Hoher Knochen; the starting and finishing point is the Neuastenberg Tourist Information Office. The 6 km N1 – Zwistmühle circular walk also starts and ends at the Tourist Information Office. Its route follows a scenic border path through the Ochsenstallsgraben and Odeborntal valleys. The Zwistmühle, a watermill with a waterwheel, is located along the N1 route in Odeborntal.

Both circular walks share the same starting and finishing point, but differ in length and route: N1 is 6 km long and passes through Ochsenstallsgraben and Odeborntal; N2 is 7 km and runs through the valley of the young Lenne and over Hoher Knochen. These details provide two concrete points of comparison when choosing a route.

Winter activities and cycling

At Postwiese in Neuastenberg, the activities include a 500 m natural toboggan run with banked curves; it is snow-covered and illuminated. Postwiese also has a fun park for snowboarders. Winter facilities may operate depending on snow and weather conditions, so it is advisable to check the latest conditions before visiting.

The Postwiese shuttle bus takes passengers with a valid ticket to the Postwiesen Ski Village Neuastenberg free of charge at regular intervals. As timetables may change, it is best to check the current schedule in advance. Cycling is another option: Neuastenberg is connected to the Bike Arena Sauerland. Its well-developed network of routes offers mountain bikers and road cyclists tours and challenges.

Winterberg as the wider destination

The wider Winterberg destination has other independently named attractions. The St. George ski jump at Herrloh is considered a landmark of Winterberg; its distinctive arch rises 80 metres above the Rothaar Mountains. The historic Astenturm tower stands on the Kahler Asten at an elevation of 841 metres and is an excursion destination in Winterberg.

The Panorama Erlebnis Brücke in Winterberg is 435 metres long and 20 metres high. At five fun elements, visitors can climb along, beneath or beside the bridge. From there, you can enjoy views of Winterberg, the city’s landmarks and sights, and the Winterberg Bike Park. The bridge is accessible to wheelchair users; dogs are allowed on a leash. Check the latest conditions before visiting.

In the Winterberg Trail Park, the “Family First” loop is aimed at trail beginners and families who want to gain their first trail experience. The Winterberg ski lift carousel offers 44 kilometres of downhill runs on groomed slopes and has modern chairlifts. Alongside Neuastenberg’s local activities, the wider Winterberg destination therefore offers other named attractions for nature, trail and winter sports enthusiasts.
