Marked circular trails start right in Altastenberg, alongside the bridge trail in the Renau Valley, winter activities and disc golf. The varied trail lengths and landscapes provide useful points of reference for planning. Which trails and activities suit your travel dates also depends on local conditions at the time.

Hiking in and around Altastenberg

The marked circular trails start right in Altastenberg and connect to the Rothaarsteig and Sauerland Höhenflug trails. As trail routes and markings can change locally, check conditions before setting out.

The 7.3-kilometre Altastenberg Bridge Trail follows the spring-fed Renau Valley over bridges and boardwalks. Wet weather can affect the wooden bridges, so take this into account when planning your day.

For a longer loop, the 10.5-kilometre Bergwiesenpfad (Mountain Meadow Trail) starts at the Haus des Gastes and passes through Altastenberg’s mountain meadows, with views towards the village. It is marked with an orange butterfly; sturdy footwear is required. Livestock and trail surfaces can vary. By comparison, the Bridge Trail focuses on the spring-fed valley and its crossings, while the Mountain Meadow Trail combines mountain meadows with views of the village.

Winter Activities and Disc Golf

Around the Kahler Asten, Altastenberg has groomed cross-country ski trails as well as winter tours for walkers and snowshoers. These activities depend on snow and seasonal conditions. The Altastenberg ski carousel adds several ski runs, including a FIS run, a family fun park and a toboggan lift. Operations may vary by season.

There is also a disc golf park in the Renau Valley, with a course for advanced players, a family course and 18 baskets. Parking, public toilets and disc rentals are available at the Haus des Gastes. Details about the facility and rental options may change; check before your visit.

Village Character

Traditional slate houses are part of Altastenberg’s architectural character. Alongside the trails and seasonal activities, they give the village its own architectural appeal.

More Experiences in the Wider Winterberg Destination

In the wider Winterberg destination, the “Family First” loop in the Winterberg Trail Park is aimed at beginners and families looking to gain their first trail-riding experience. The St. George ski jump is also a Winterberg landmark: its striking arch rises 80 metres above the Rothaar Mountains at Herrloh.

The Panorama Erlebnis Brücke in Winterberg is 435 metres long and 20 metres high. Five fun elements let visitors scramble over, under or alongside the bridge. The bridge is accessible to wheelchair users; dogs are welcome on a lead. As operating conditions can change, check them before your visit. From the bridge, you can see Winterberg, the town’s landmarks and attractions, and the bike park.
