The Wenne Trail runs from Wenneplatz in the centre of the village to the Esmecke Reservoir: the walking path along the Wenne is 1.2 kilometres long. At the end, there is a bathing cove and a large sunbathing lawn. If you plan to use these recreational facilities, it’s best to check their condition before your visit.
Hiking trails with different highlights
The local circular hiking trails each offer something different. The W4 circular route goes around the village, past the Esmecke Reservoir and back to the starting point. W6 runs along the Beerenberg and past the Lauschgeist. W1 offers beautiful views over the Land of a Thousand Mountains. The described options therefore range from a circular route by the lake and a trail along the Beerenberg to a scenic viewpoint experience.
The “Sauerland Höhenflug,” a “Quality Trail: Wanderable Germany,” passes directly through Wenholthausen. The area also has the “Short Walk around the Esmecke Reservoir.” For help finding your way around the village, follow the “Hölter” History Trail, which invites you to visit buildings and squares and learn about their history and stories.
Cycling and other activities
Wenholthausen lies directly on the Hennesee Loop of the Sauerland Cycle Ring. If you’d like to include a bike ride alongside walks and circular hiking routes in your plans, this is another named option in the area. Paragliding from Markshöhe offers an elevation difference of 291 metres. The Pit-Pat course combines billiards and mini golf, offering a different focus from the trails and outdoor activities.
Gardens, chapels and local history
The Tiger Garden is a garden of native and medicinal plants, with sculptures and paintings. A visit to the gallery in the Tiger Garden must be arranged by telephone. Call ahead to arrange your visit and check what is currently available before you travel.
The St. Cecilia Church also brings together different periods of construction: when the new church was built in 1971, the older church tower was preserved. Eibel Chapel is a historic chapel on the Eibel, at the end of the Stations of the Cross. Together with the “Hölter” History Trail, these sites offer different ways to explore Wenholthausen’s history.
A special point of interest in Eslohe (Sauerland)
In the wider destination of Eslohe (Sauerland), the DampfLandLeute Museum is located in a side valley of Eslohe, a state-recognised climatic health resort. The permanent exhibition covers agriculture, forestry, village crafts, folklore and technology. During Steam Days, historic steam engines are put into operation at least twice a year. From April to October, the museum railway runs with a diesel locomotive from 3 to 5 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month. Check the dates when planning your specific visit. Around 200-year-old half-timbered houses stand in Eslohe’s historic centre, around the parish church of St. Peter and Paul.
