Cobbenrode combines a 15-kilometre circular hike with historic architecture and preserved mill technology. The C3 starts at Stertschultenhof; the Old Mill offers a further glimpse into the former use of water and grain. Different priorities can shape your travel plans: spending time outdoors on the trail or visiting places according to their opening hours and demonstration schedules. Check the signs, visitor access and dates in advance.

Hiking the C3 and the Eslohe Border Trail

The 15-kilometre C3 circular trail starts at Stertschultenhof and follows the C3 trail markers through Niedermarpe, Dormecke, Obermarpe and Hengslade. Views, open fields and woodland are all part of the route. Check the trail markers and conditions before setting out.

The Eslohe Border Trail follows the municipal boundaries towards Schmallenberg, Meschede, Sundern and Lennestadt. The landscape is characterised by forests, meadows, herbs, butterflies and insects, and there are several possible starting points. Here, too, it is advisable to check current trail conditions before setting out. The C3 focuses on the circular route and the sequence of named places, while the Border Trail highlights municipal boundaries, the landscape and several possible starting points.

Stertschultenhof and the Old Mill

Stertschultenhof is a former coach station for Meschede Monastery and was first mentioned in 1310. It was restored between 1998 and 2001; its characteristic stencil and roller paintings on the walls have been preserved. The farmstead can be visited as a historic building. Since 2001, it has also served as a public meeting place and an archive for Low German dialects. Check the opening arrangements in advance of your visit.

The Old Mill in Cobbenrode is a restored water-powered grain mill dating from the 17th or 18th century. Its water-powered system can be demonstrated, and the preserved milling equipment can be used to grind grain. A small museum room displays tools used by millers in the past. Demonstrations may depend on arrangements made locally.

The mill complex also includes a bakehouse with a stone oven dating from 1903. On regular baking days, traditional stone-oven bread is baked there and served with Sauerland specialities such as ham, lard or honey. Check the dates locally before planning your visit around them.

Eslohe is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park and is a state-recognised climatic health resort. In the historic town centre, half-timbered houses around 200 years old stand around the parish church of St Peter and Paul.

The DampfLandLeute Museum is located in a side valley of Eslohe, a state-recognised climatic health resort. Its permanent exhibition covers agriculture, forestry, village crafts, folklore and technology. During Steam Days, historic steam engines are operated at least twice a year. From April to October, the museum railway runs with a diesel locomotive on the first Saturday of each month from 3 to 5 pm. Check the seasonal running dates in advance.

Another perspective is offered by the 84-kilometre SauerlandRadring, which connects Finnentrop, Eslohe, Schmallenberg and Lennestadt. Alongside hiking trails, this provides regional culture and cycling options, without prescribing a fixed order in which to visit the places.
