Lochtrop can be explored through distinct, clearly defined themes: protected grassland and water areas, route connections and a recurring event. Together, they offer guidance when deciding whether countryside, outdoor activities or local history should be the focus of your trip.
Grassland and water areas near Lochtrop
The “Open countryside areas west and south of Lochtrop” landscape conservation area covers 4.5 ha. It includes slopes used as grassland on the western edge of the village, as well as grassland to the south. The aim is to preserve the severely restricted open space between the settled area and the extensive surroundings, which are characterised by woodland and Christmas tree plantations.
The “Wenne and tributary near Lochtrop” landscape conservation area covers 16.4 ha across two sections. Within this protected area, the Wenne meanders largely freely and is lined with trees and shrubs in places. The tributary’s original valley hollow is used exclusively as grassland. In addition, the “Alluvial forests / flowing waters south of Lochtrop” area covers 1.508 ha; the “Watercourse from Frielinghausen to Lochtrop” area covers 0.845 ha.
Routes with different connections to Lochtrop
When planning your routes, it is worth distinguishing carefully between the details: the Eslohe Family Tour goes through Lochtrop to Frielinghausen. By contrast, the first stage of the Eslohe Grenzgänger runs from Schartmecke to Frielinghausen and passes by Lochtrop. Both route descriptions name Frielinghausen as the destination; Lochtrop lies on one route and beside the other.
Highland Games and local history
Highland Games have been held in Lochtrop since 2016. Every two years, the local Highlander Verein invites visitors to the Erves-Scheune, where men and women compete in Scottish contests. If the Games are a key part of your trip, coordinate your travel dates with the specific event date.
Local history also reflects community organisation. On 7 November 1919, the villages of Bremke, Frielinghausen, Lochtrop and Husen founded a Sankt-Antonius-Sammelverein. Collections were intended to raise the necessary funds to establish Catholic church services in Bremke. In 1948, Frielinghausen, Lochtrop, Husen and Bremke formed the Pfarrvikarie St. Antonius Eins. m.e.V., with its own asset management. The two dates mark different steps: a foundation to raise funds, followed later by the formation of a parish curacy with its own asset management.
In the wider destination of Eslohe (Sauerland)
In the wider destination of Eslohe (Sauerland), Eslohe lies in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park and is a state-recognised climatic health resort. The 84-kilometre SauerlandRadring connects Finnentrop, Lennestadt, Schmallenberg and Eslohe. It follows a former railway line and is designed for families and touring cyclists.
The DampfLandLeute Museum is located in a side valley of the climatic health resort of Eslohe. Its permanent exhibition covers agriculture, forestry, village crafts, folklore and technology. From April to October, the museum railway runs with a diesel locomotive from 3 to 5 pm on the first Saturday of every month. If you plan to take the train, check the timetable in advance, as seasonal operating arrangements may change. During the steam days, historic steam engines are operated at least twice a year.
