Eslohe (Sauerland) is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park and is a state-recognized climatic health resort. Historic half-timbered houses, the DampfLandLeute Museum, a heritage railway and cycling options each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide what interests you most: local history and technology, or cycling and other leisure activities? Some attractions are available year-round, while others are tied to specific dates or the season.
Half-timbered houses and local history
In the historic center, half-timbered houses around the parish church of St. Peter and Paul are around 200 years old. Their approximate age and location near the church give the center a distinct historical character. If you are interested in the development of rural life and the history of technology, you can complement this impression with a visit to the DampfLandLeute Museum.
DampfLandLeute Museum and heritage railway
The museum is located in a side valley of the climatic health resort. Its permanent exhibition covers agriculture, forestry, village crafts, folklore and technology. These subjects bring together different aspects of life and work in the Sauerland: from working the land and forests to crafts and technological developments. Historical steam engines are also operated at the museum during Steam Days, which take place at least twice a year.
The heritage railway timetable is separate: from April to October, it runs with a diesel locomotive on the first Saturday of every month from 3 to 5 p.m. The Steam Days and railway trips are therefore two different events, each requiring its own planning. As seasonal operating arrangements may change, check the current dates and running times before your visit.
Cycling and other leisure activities
The 84-kilometer SauerlandRadring connects Finnentrop, Eslohe, Schmallenberg and Lennestadt. This distance refers to the entire route, not just the section in Eslohe. Much of the ring follows former railway lines. This makes for a contrast between a specific trip on the heritage railway and a regional cycling route whose stated distance applies to the entire route.
The Bike Parcours Eslohe at the Fun- & Sportanlage Eslohe offers dirt lines, jumps at three difficulty levels, a flow trail and a large pump track. Eslohe also has an indoor swimming pool, a heated outdoor pool and mini golf courses. These options broaden the choice beyond local history and cycling; the outdoor pool is specifically heated.
The Hochsauerlandkreis in context
As a wider travel destination, the Hochsauerlandkreis provides additional landscape context, distinct from the attractions in Eslohe. The Kahle Asten is in the district: at 841 meters, it is one of the highest elevations in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park is another regional point of reference. The Hochsauerlandkreis is a member of the nature park, including the areas currently located in the Homert and Rothaargebirge nature parks; it is one of the largest nature parks in Germany.
To help choose what to do, consider the type of experience: the exhibition offers permanent, organized museum topics, while Steam Days and heritage railway trips are tied to specific dates. The SauerlandRadring, meanwhile, connects several towns. This can help you decide whether local history, a particular railway or steam-engine experience, or the cycling route should shape your stay.
