A 400-year-old watermill, a museum dedicated to local history and a cultural center each give Löhne a distinct character. Rürupsmühle explores the pre-industrial journey from grain to bread; the municipal museum focuses on local history. There are also events, a heritage route and a nature reserve on the border with Herford. During your stay, you can choose between mill history, cultural events and the surrounding landscape.

Mills and Local History

Rürupsmühle is a 400-year-old watermill in Löhne. It demonstrates the pre-industrial process from grain to bread. The mill also includes a bakehouse and a thatched farmhouse dating from 1717. The mill machinery, production process and historic buildings offer different perspectives on the subject: the story extends from the raw ingredient to the finished bread and includes traditional rural architecture.

The municipal museum in Löhne presents local history in a permanent exhibition. Its cultural program also includes talks, workshops, guided group visits and a virtual tour. Unlike Rürupsmühle, the museum focuses on local history and presents it in a range of formats. You can choose what to focus on based on whether you are particularly interested in mill machinery or the history of the town.

Cultural Events and Heritage Route

Werretalhalle is a cultural and community center in Löhne that hosts a variety of events. The program includes theater performances, art exhibitions and creative workshops. While the municipal museum’s exhibition is permanent, the program at Werretalhalle changes. Check the dates if a particular performance or exhibition is important to your trip.

The Löhne Heritage Route begins at Löhne station and leads to Ulenburg Castle. Ulenburger Allee forms the entrance to the castle, is 2.7 kilometers long, contains about 400 trees and is protected as a natural monument. The protected park at Ulenburg also has its own distinctive character: it was laid out in the 19th century and has a valuable collection of rare trees. So, in addition to the castle, you can explore both a tree-lined approach and a historic park.

Landscape and Getting Here

The Bramschebach-/Nagelsbachtal nature reserve follows the municipal border between Herford and Löhne for about six kilometers and covers 197 hectares. It is a wetland refuge and a characteristic, well-developed Siek valley system of the Ravensberg Hills. Unlike the cultural venues, this area is defined by its wetlands and the landscape of the Ravensberg Hills. Please stay on designated paths when visiting.

Löhne station is served by Regional Express trains from Bünde, Herford and Bad Oeynhausen. Bringing a bicycle is subject to restrictions. Check current timetables and bicycle regulations before traveling. As the heritage route begins at the station, you can take its starting point into account when planning your arrival.
