Several different themes are available for a stay in Bünde: geological history at the Doberg, tobacco and cigar history, historic buildings, as well as urban green spaces and cycling routes. When looking for a hotel in Bünde, it helps to first decide on the mix of nature, culture, and green spaces you want. This lets you tailor your stay to your own interests without every discovery having to follow the same theme.
Doberg: geological history on the southeastern edge of Bünde
The Doberg nature reserve lies on the southeastern edge of Bünde and covers 48 hectares. It consists of fossil-rich marl deposits from an arm of the ancient North Sea, formed around 38 to 25 million years ago. Its complete succession of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Oligocene is of particular geological significance: Doberg is the only above-ground exposure in northern Germany to show this succession. In the Herford travel destination, the Doberg in Bünde is also one of the globally recognized geological reference sites for the Chattian.
Steep walls, wide basins, and round and elongated pits shape the landscape and create the Doberg’s distinctive natural appeal. Here, the geological succession meets clearly visible landforms. Those interested in geological history can explore two interconnected aspects of the area: its formation in an arm of the ancient North Sea and the characteristic landforms seen today.
Tobacco history, a church, and half-timbered houses
The German Tobacco and Cigar Museum is housed in Striedieck-Hof, a farm built in 1828. The exhibition features 2,230 objects and 31 media stations on tobacco and tobacco consumption. Local cigar production began with Georg Meyer in 1842; Tönnies Wellensiek followed in 1843. There is only one year between the two stated production dates—a brief opening chapter in the history of cigar production in Bünde.
Laurentius Church and Hof Rahning also offer insights into architectural history. Laurentius Church is one of the oldest church foundations in Westphalia; at the core of its present structure is a late Romanesque cross hall dating from the 13th century. Hof Rahning is a four-post timber-framed house dating from 1677. The museum, church, and farmstead thus represent different ways of exploring history: a collection on tobacco and cigar culture, a religious building, and a historic half-timbered house.
Urban green spaces and cycling routes in Bünde
Steinmeister Park is a 2.5-hectare urban green space with walking paths, benches, and a playground. Its paths and seating offer a different focus from the geological history of the Doberg and the historic buildings. The municipal cycling network runs mostly away from main roads. It consists of three circular routes and radial routes leading from the center to the districts. As the network may change due to infrastructure projects, it is advisable to check the current route before planning a specific bike ride.
Randringhausen health resort
Randringhausen is a state-recognized health resort with a spa area and iodine-sulfur springs. The woodland recreation area in Randringhausen covers about 266 hectares, of which around 34 hectares are designated as the spa area. This comparison in size highlights the difference between the extensive recreation area and the smaller spa district.
