Kirchlengern is part of the Wittekindsland and Teutoburg Forest holiday regions. River landscapes, hiking opportunities and technological history are especially important when planning a visit: the Else and the Rehmerloh-MennighĂĽffer Mill Stream represent different nature themes, while the fire brigade museum and Rehmerloh bathing house offer historical discoveries. This lets you decide in advance whether you would like to focus your trip on nature conservation, a hike or technological history.

River landscapes and protected habitats

The 117-hectare Elseaue nature reserve lies in the Else Valley between BĂĽnde and Kirchlengern. The Else flows in a near-natural state for about 3.5 kilometres through this area. Its meanders and steep banks, which reach up to three metres high and provide habitat for kingfishers, are notable features. The protected river landscape can also be understood through its specific form: the winding course and steep banks define this stretch. When visiting, be aware of possible access restrictions in the nature reserve.

Canoeing on the Else is another activity available in Kirchlengern. If you plan to do this, check water access and providers before your trip. This allows you to combine the natural surroundings with an activity on the river without conflating the protected banks with the canoeing offer.

Another landscape feature is the Rehmerloh-MennighĂĽffer Mill Stream, which runs for around eleven kilometres through the Quernheim Hills. Almost its entire course and adjacent areas are designated as a nature reserve; the protected area covers more than 220 hectares. Kingfishers nest along its steep banks. Gravel and sandbanks serve as spawning grounds for up to 18 fish species. Here, both the streamside habitats and the varied structures in the streambed are in focus.

Hiking: signposted trails and an unmarked circular route

Kirchlengern has numerous signposted hiking trails. One specific option is the circular route around Stift Quernheim: it starts and ends at the collegiate church, in front of which there is public parking. Unlike the signposted trails, this circular route is unmarked and passes through a nature reserve. Hikers are expected to stay on the paths there. Before setting out, check current route conditions and the parking situation, especially if you choose this circular route.

The two stream landscapes and the hiking opportunities offer different points of focus. At Elseaue, the Else’s near-natural course and its steep banks take centre stage; along the Rehmerloh-Mennighüffer Mill Stream, gravel and sandbanks are also described as habitats, in addition to the stream itself. The circular route around Stift Quernheim, by contrast, offers a specific reference point for planning your hike, but being unmarked means it presents a different navigation situation from the signposted trails.

Technological history and historic sites

The fire brigade museum in Häver displays around 10,000 collection items documenting the development of firefighting. Notable objects include a 23-metre-long, horse-drawn turntable ladder, considered the largest and heaviest of its kind in Germany. The museum therefore offers a distinct historical focus alongside Kirchlengern’s landscape attractions. The collection remains of lasting interest, but visitor arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check before visiting.

Another historic landmark is the Rehmerloh bathing house. It is considered the only technical monument of its kind in Westphalia to have been largely preserved in its original condition. The local history dates back to 1883, when a mineral spring was tapped in Rehmerloh and a bathhouse and lodging house were built there. This historical sequence tells the story of the bathing and lodging business; it does not indicate that overnight accommodation is available in the bathing house today.

Kirchlengern’s “Zeitreisen 24/7” (“Time Travels 24/7”) programme provides historical information via QR codes at twelve monuments at any time. If you would like to visit these sites, check during planning whether the QR infrastructure is available. The programme complements the individual stories of the fire brigade museum and the bathing house with information at several monuments.

More things to explore in the Herford destination

The wider Herford destination offers additional, distinct attractions. Marta Herford combines art, design and architecture, and offers exhibitions, events and educational programmes for museum visitors of all ages. In Bünde, the Doberg is recognised as one of the world’s valid geological reference points for the Chattian. Hücker Moor includes a roughly twelve-hectare moor lake, created by peat extraction at the end of the 18th century. These places broaden the region’s appeal with art, geology and moorland landscapes.
