Schöneseiffen lies on the Dreiborn Plateau above the Olef Valley. Its elevation affords sweeping views of the landscape, and the village is also close to Eifel National Park. Schöneseiffen is part of the Drömmede “Highlands.” At almost 623 metres, Hollerscheid is the highest point on the Dreiborn Plateau. The plateau and valley are therefore central to a stay focused on the landscape and experiences in nature.
Hiking between the plateau and the valley
There are numerous marked hiking trails around Schöneseiffen, leading from the open plateau down into the Olef valleys. There is also the “Around Schöneseiffen (33)” circular trail: it is 6 kilometres long, starts at Schafbachmühle and climbs to Schöneseiffen. The return route follows sunny paths around the village and through the Schafbach Valley back to Schafbachmühle. The circuit thus combines an ascent with a return through the valley. The trails on the circular route are well maintained, and it is also suitable for all-terrain strollers.
If you are considering more than a single circuit, the marked hiking network extends from the open plateau into the Olef valleys. Nearby Oleftalsperre reservoir and Hellenthal Wildlife Park offer further opportunities for nature and leisure activities. When choosing your hike, you can decide between the well-defined 6-kilometre circular route and the broader network of trails through varied landscapes.
Memorial sites and local events
The Schöneseiffen war memorial features a red sandstone cross. The names of those who fell in the First World War are carved into it. Twenty-two German war dead are buried at the Schleiden-Schöneseiffen war cemetery. Together, these memorial sites give a visit a historical focus as well as the opportunity to experience nature.
The harvest festival procession is also part of local history: the first one in Schöneseiffen took place in 1953. It is held every year on the first Sunday in October. The route follows the main street to the war memorial, passes the sports ground and continues along Hellenthaler Straße to Schöneseiffen. Check the date before your trip. Another annual event is the “Day of Youth” organised by the Schöneseiffen Music Association. Visitors can see and try out many instruments there; it is also worth checking the event dates for this occasion.
More options in the wider destination of Schleiden
The wider destination of Schleiden offers further nature and cultural experiences. At the Vogelsang IP International Place in the Eifel National Park Star Park, the observatory run by the “Sterne ohne Grenzen” astronomy workshop regularly holds public skywatching events. The Eifel National Park Centre in Schleiden houses the accessible, interactive “Wildnis(t)räume” nature exhibition. The centre is open year-round and is the starting point for regular ranger tours through Eifel National Park. Check the ranger tour dates before your trip.
