Wintzen combines a local history dating back to its first recorded mention in 1464 with hiking trails and traces of earlier ore mining. Woodlands and Pingen shape the surrounding landscape; in the village, a road passes through the gatehouse known as the “Poarz” of a half-timbered property.
Woodlands, Pingen and Local History
Pingen are collapsed ore-mining sites of the kind once common in the Kall and Sötenich area. The term thus describes a specific former use and also places the landscape in the regional context of ore mining. Woodlands and Pingen shape the surroundings of Wintzen in different ways: one is a natural feature of the landscape, the other a trace of mining.
The village’s buildings also offer a distinctive point of interest: a road passes through the gatehouse known as the “Poarz” of a half-timbered property. The passageway connects the road directly with the gatehouse and its half-timbered architecture. The village community association is also committed to preserving the wayside chapel.
Hiking Trails with Different Connections
Wintzen is a starting point for peaceful walks and short hikes away from the larger trails. Hiking trails also begin here and head towards the Eifel National Park, six kilometres away. There is a choice of both quieter routes and hiking routes towards the national park.
One specific circular hike is the Broicher Wald Tour: it is 8.1 kilometres long and runs from Schleiden via Wintzen and Broich. In Wintzen, the route passes a chapel before continuing into the Broicher Wald towards Broich. The Eifelsteig also passes Wintzen. The Broicher Wald Tour is a named circular route through the village, while the Eifelsteig is another trail that passes through Wintzen.
