Castle complexes, mining history and hiking trails showcase different sides of Hellenthal. If you’re looking for accommodation here, you can plan your stay around your own interests—for example, by setting aside time for historic sites, a walk by the water or longer routes through forests and valleys. The municipality offers a wide selection of signposted hiking trails and several specific destinations that can be explored independently of one another.

Reifferscheid Castle and Mining History

In Reifferscheid, a castle ruin, the outer bailey and a fortified settlement are part of the historic townscape; the complex is open to visitors free of charge. Reifferscheid was first documented in 1106. Half-timbered houses and old lanes preserve its medieval character. A stroll here takes in not only the castle remains, but also the historic town centre that has grown up around them.

The Wohlfahrt Mine visitor mine offers a different way to explore the region’s history. It traces the mining tradition from the late Middle Ages through the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Deep Adit and its side tunnels form a visitor route of approximately 900 metres. If you’d rather combine mining history above ground with hiking, there’s also a mining trail around the mine and the EifelSchleife Bergbaupfad.

The Castles Route also links historic destinations: it starts in Hellenthal below the Oleftalsperre reservoir and continues to the ruins of Reifferscheid and Wildenburg. It offers a distinct route option for anyone who would like to focus on castles and their history.

Hiking Through Forests and Valleys

More than 220 kilometres of signposted hiking trails wind through the municipality’s forests, valleys and ridges. There are also the EifelSchleifen, circular trails with varying levels of difficulty. The options range from shorter walks to hikes you can allow more time for; specific walking times are not provided here for individual trails.

The Rur-Olef Route passes through deciduous forests, meadows and fields, past rocky stretches and streams, and across open landscapes on the ridges of Eifel National Park. Its description shows how varied the landscape can be along a single route. If you’re looking for a loop with a clearly stated distance, you can include the 13.5-kilometre circular route around Olefsee in your plans. It is suitable for hiking and cycling.

Olefsee, National Park and WeiĂźer Stein

Olefsee serves as a drinking water reservoir. Swimming and water sports are therefore not permitted there. This is an important distinction when planning your visit: the lake is a destination for a walk or bike ride, not a day at the beach. Around 56 hectares within Eifel National Park lie in Hellenthal; beech and oak forests, stream valleys and rocky terrain characterise the landscape there.

Another landmark is the WeiĂźer Stein observation tower. It is 30 metres high and stands at an elevation of 720 metres; 147 steps lead to the top.

The Hellenthal Bird of Prey Station and Wildlife Park offer encounters with birds of prey and native wildlife. Informative guided tours and flight demonstrations are also available. This adds another possible focus for your stay alongside historic sites and hiking trails.

Planning Your Journey and Accommodation

Hellenthal is connected to Kall railway station by bus routes SB81/829; the service also runs in the evening. As routes and timetables may change, check the latest connections before travelling. When looking for a hotel in Hellenthal, it can help to first decide what you plan to do: the castle and mine add a cultural and historical focus, while the hiking trails, Olefsee and national park offer other options.
