In Nettersheim, sections of a Roman settlement and the Roman road are visible in the landscape. There is also an archaeological circular trail, a longer cycling loop, and an herb hiking trail. For planning your trip, a practical question is therefore what kind of day you prefer: history at several stops, a cycling loop, or a hike between two places. The options differ both in length and in route format.

Roman Traces in the Landscape Park

The Archaeological Landscape Park makes sections of the Roman settlement and the Roman road visible to visitors in the landscape. An approximately 4.5-kilometer circular trail leads to eight stops and starts at the Eifel Nature Center. Along the way, partial reconstructions make the results of excavations in the vicus of Nettersheim visible. The loop thus combines an archaeological focus with a set sequence of stops.

If you are particularly interested in the Roman past, this trail offers a concrete way to take in both the visible traces and the partial reconstructions. Its length and eight stops give the visit a manageable framework, without specifying a walking time or a particular level of difficulty.

Cycling Loop or Herb Hiking Trail?

The Via Velo is a 22.5-kilometer circular route. You can choose the Eifel Nature Center as your starting point; the ride takes about two to three hours. The cycling tour therefore differs from the shorter archaeological loop both in distance and in its stated duration. If you enjoy cycling, you can plan your ride on the Via Velo within this specific time frame.

The 20-kilometer Eifel Herb Path leads from the Eifelsteig in Nettersheim to Bad MĂĽnstereifel. On the hike, you can experience the local herbs and plants with all your senses. Unlike the Via Velo, this trail runs between two named places; the Via Velo is a circular route. This distinction can help you choose: what matters is not only the number of kilometers, but also whether you prefer a loop or a route with a different destination.

Trails into Nature and the Nature Center

From the Eifel Nature Center, you can reach orchid meadows, Roman temples, and fossil-rich areas on foot or by bicycle via a variety of nature trails. The trails cover different themes: you can explore the natural environment and plant life as well as Roman traces and fossil finds. You can choose among the nature trails on foot or by bicycle.

Opened in 1989, the Eifel Nature Center invites visitors to discover nature and history. It is the starting point for the archaeological circular trail; it can also be chosen as the starting point for the Via Velo. When planning your activities, it therefore makes sense to first decide on the focus you want and then choose the right type of route. The circular routes and the herb path offer different experiences, so you do not have to treat all three as one combined program.
