The Stadtmuseum “DAS TOR,” which presents Coesfeld’s past, is housed in the preserved Walkenbrückentor, a remnant of the city’s fortifications dating from the 14th century. This makes a specific historic building the starting point for exploring the city’s history. Other perspectives range from the Bischofsmühle to a circular trail across the site of the former fortress.

City history at specific places

The Bischofsmühle is a fully operational mill museum; its equipment dates from around 1900. The former synagogue is used for cultural events and exhibitions. The Gabelkreuz is considered the oldest cross of its kind in Westphalia.

Since the end of 2022, the Natz-Thier-Haus has served as a memorial site. There, the Natz-Thier art and culture workshop and the Fair Gehandelt shop engage artistically with the work of Natz Thier. Check the current access arrangements before visiting.

There are different ways to explore the city’s history: The bookable night watchman tour leads through winding streets and explores Coesfeld’s history. There are also self-guided tours that do not require booking, as well as free downloadable accompanying materials. This lets you choose between a guided tour and independent options.

Circular trails, park, and the Berkel

Opened in 2025, the Citadellenweg is a circular trail around and across the grounds of the former Ludgerusburg. Fourteen interpretive stations enhance the route. Unlike this walk across a former fortress site, the Baumberge Sandstone Route passes through a larger regional landscape.

The Schlosspark, also known as Liebfrauenpark, opened to the public in 1980. In the center of Coesfeld, it serves as a meeting place and recreation area. The park is also a venue for cultural events and Sport-im-Park activities; check the dates of specific events. Along the Berkel in the city center, design features make the river visible, and direct water access points provide access to the Berkel within the city.

Coesfeld lies on the 152-kilometer-long Baumberge Sandstone Route, a circular route through hilly countryside with forests, fields, and meadows. The route connects more than 200 sandstone buildings. The Citadellenweg focuses on the former fortress site, while the sandstone route places landscape and architecture in a regional context.
