When choosing a place to stay in Ascheberg, it helps to distinguish between local attractions and the options available in the Coesfeld district. Locally, highlights include a Gothic church, tree routes and cultural attractions in Davensberg and Herbern. At district level, there are additional cultural destinations as well as hiking and cycling routes. This lets you decide whether to focus your trip on Ascheberg or include other destinations in the Coesfeld district.

Church and cultural attractions in the municipality

St. Lambertus Church in Ascheberg is a Gothic hall church. Johann Conrad Schlaun designed its chancel in 1740. The church therefore offers two architectural points of interest: its Gothic design and Schlaun’s work on the chancel.

Davensberg is part of the municipality of Ascheberg. The surviving castle tower now houses a museum; visits are possible by prior arrangement. Davensberg’s St. Anne’s Castle Chapel is also home to a famous folding altarpiece by Brabender.

Westerwinkel Castle in Herbern offers a different focus: the grounds are best appreciated from the outside, while the park invites visitors to walk and relax. Check the current conditions before visiting.

Tree routes and a specific cycling route

The tree routes pass through Herbern and Ascheberg, taking visitors to particularly notable trees and providing information about them. The Veloroute offers a different kind of guidance: the section from the edge of Ascheberg, at the junction of the B58 and Davensberger StraĂźe (L844), follows the country road to Davensberg. This gives you two different options: individual trees and information about them on the one hand, and a clearly described route on the other. Check the current route before setting out.

In the Coesfeld district: more cultural attractions and routes

The Coesfeld district is distinguished by an exceptionally high concentration of palaces, castles and historic aristocratic residences. Some are open to visitors or serve as event venues, museums or day-trip destinations; access conditions vary from site to site. Since 1976, Kolvenburg in Billerbeck has been used as the district’s cultural centre. Since 1972, Vischering Castle in Lüdinghausen has served as a museum, exhibition venue and event venue for the Coesfeld district. It stands on two islands in the Stever’s millponds on the northwestern edge of Lüdinghausen. The event programme may change; check current dates before visiting.

In the town of Coesfeld, the Walkenbrückentor is a remnant of the 14th-century town fortifications. It houses the town museum DAS TOR, which explores Coesfeld’s past. It is open on Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Check the opening hours again before your visit.

At district level, cyclists can enjoy an extensive network of several hundred kilometres of well-maintained routes. The routes connect towns, municipalities and districts, passing through the parkland of Münsterland. Münsterland’s junction network supports flexible route planning with numbered junctions and freely chosen sequences of numbers. Coesfeld is a recommended starting point for the main route of the Hohe Mark RadRoute; the Coesfeld Star Tour uses the town as the starting point for four cycling tours.

The hiking routes in the wider Coesfeld destination also vary in length and format. Coesfeld and Lette have local circular hiking routes ranging from 4 to 20 kilometres. The 30-kilometre Baumberger Ludgerusweg runs between Stift Tilbeck and Coesfeld. These distances help you compare a circular walk with a longer route between two places, depending on the distance you want to cover; check the conditions on each route before setting out.
